Hob overflow to a sump.

Hob overflow is fine generally. You have to understand that there is a 1% chance it could spill the sump return pump section of water over the floor. You can mitigate this by a smaller return pump section. You do need a good auto top off and stay on top of that. I drilled because im on hardwood above another floor. Many people have had hob overflows run for years without issue.

Thanks for the advice..I looked at the internal filter and that looks like what I need....would I need the skimmer too?

Maybe not for the first few months, but eventually. It does such a good job at getting all the crap out of the tank I don’t see why anyone would not want one.

Are you still in the return window for the tank? If so, I say return it and get a reef-ready version that's pre-drilled.

Im late to this thread, wish i would have seen it when you asked. My first attempt at a reef tank was a 75. My new tank i started in December is a 75. My first one had a hob Emperor 400, Very good filtration, and the first tank ended up slightly over stocked, Had great coraline growth, but my attempt at a reef was changed to a FOWLR tank due to a few adoptions that ate corrals. My tank now has the Emperor 450, which has impressed me. Its budget and does an excellent job. The pump is in the tank as apposed to the emperor 400 i had, which would have troubles restarting in a power outage. I change my filtration Monthly, but that will also depend on Bio load. I agree, canisters are just high maintenance and tough to deal with. HOB, you can swap your filtration in minutes.

I am working on getting my new tank together..I ordered a basic 75 gallon to start with...My question is will a fluval 407 cannisters be enough filter to carry my tank?

I have a 55 with 307 canister clean filter once a month no skimmer and full of caral 4 clown 2 pajamas, a sail fin, but lost two others from parasite so letting tank starve it's self before adding more fish. We have to dose with nitro because nitrates are too low. But we do have a lot of coral will be transferring to a 75 with a 407 for more flow.

We challenge the norm and mythes and have been successful so far. For a year. We have to dose with nitro because nitrates are too low. But we do have a lot of coral will be transferring to a 75 with a 407 for more flow. And a better wave maker to help oxygenation. Little to no water changes.this hobby is all about finding that right balance and leaving it the heck alone as soon as you mess with one thing the whole tank changes. From moving a wavemaker a little to moving a coral or a rock. air raters are temporary because treating cyano. Torches are a 24k potogold, dragon soul and can't remember the other but it's pretty and getting a holy Grail tomorrow they are my favorite next to pretty chalices. My wife loves devils hand as it is front and center and iv only got 5 pieces in here and just the brains of this operation good luck and happy reefing.
