This is great...I recently took a hiatus from the hobby, and in getting a waterbox 220.6 set up for myself as my dream tank build! Great to see someone in a similar situation!

OK... So update on a couple of things. Waterbox is on the way! Should receive it on Monday. Very excited. In the meantime, here are the parameters on our QT.

Salinity - 1.024
Temp - 78.3º
pH - 8.38
Nitrite - 3ppm
Nitrate - 40ppm
Ammonia - 0ppm
Calcium - 448ppm
Alk - 7.9 dKH
Phosphate - 0.02ppm

Here's the thing... On Sunday Ammonia went down to 0ppm, so we brought it back up to 2ppm with Dr. Tims Ammonia. On Monday it went down to 0.50ppm and today it's at 0ppm again.

  1. First question is... Are we done with cycle? Should we continue to bring ammonia up to 2ppm every time it goes down to 0ppm until we add fish to help keep the tank going? Or should we just leave as is.
  2. Second question is... We have a Petsmart TopFin 10g tank for our QT. It doesn't have a skimmer on it and we removed the filtration that it did have. Can I add a little bag of carbon in it's place instead?
  3. Third question is... Is there anything else we need to add to the tank to make sure that we can have fish?
Thanks in advance for everyone's help!

Given you have rock in the tank and the ammonia is going down to zero fairly quickly, you should be OK now.

Yes you can, but I'd rather have the filter than carbon in the system (I assume it's in a HOB filter)? Carbon is mostly to make the water clear, the filter removes particulate matter.

Third question is... Is there anything else we need to add to the tank to make sure that we can have fish?

Be prepared to do a water change at some point and keep a watch on the Nitrate level. Do you have a sump & skimmer? Even better, do you have a refugium? The macro algae in a refugium will help keep nitrates down, possibly even at zero which makes the need for water changes less frequent.

No sump. No skimmer. No refugium. Those will all be on our display tank. This tank will just be for observation prior to placing the fish in our display. Also, it looks like the filter that came with the tank that goes in the HOB is just carbon. So, I figured I can just add the carbon that I have in there instead of buying new filters. Will definitely be doing a weekly water change on this tank once we have the fish in. Thanks for the help!

Very cool. We're going to the British Virgin Islands this summer. I hope to do Fiji the next year and the Maldives the year after that. Then if I still can I'd like to get to Australia & the South Pacific or the Galapagos Islands after that.

Hi Esther. You can go ahead and add fish to your qt. I would do a 2 gallon water change and go for it. I would get some filter floss for the filter. Some carbon won’t hurt, but not necessary. If you decide to medicate the fish remove the carbon. Put you ammonia badge back in the qt. Make sure you inspect the fish for signs of disease daily. Your new build is going to be sweet.

Another quick update. Purchased this from Ikea to house all of our dry goods in the drawers (test kits, reagents, etc.) and to house our GHL System along with all of our dosing canisters. We'll be doing all of the wire management this weekend in preparation of receiving tank on Monday. Tank will be going on the right of the cabinet. Let me know what you guys think. :)

Also, quick parameter update on our QT.

Here's a sneak preview... Holy cow, this tank is HEAVY! I have a lot of thoughts about the tank and setting up the stand, how it is dealing with @Waterbox Aquariums, etc. that I will be posting in detail as well! Stay tuned.
