I started this journey over 10 years ago. Got a new tank 2+ years ago and just now getting around to adding corals. Talk about going slow. I don’t know how the marine hobbyists managed things in the pre-internet age.

Well I was there-ish. We had internet it just wasnt up to the level it is now with pertinent info. Books and buddies were my go-to. You really had to find a mentor that was trustworthy. I luckily found one, too bad he has moved so far away from me now I sometime really could use the help. He helped me with chemistry mostly, setting up a calcium reactor and dialing in of kalkwasser to offset and supplement the reactor stuff like that. These forums are great but a hands-on buddy that can actually look at and touch your system in person is invaluable.I started this journey over 10 years ago. As you already know Chatgpt is a great tool just dont believe everything it tells you. You have to crosscheck anything it tells you. Cant remember if it was this thread or another but I use it to help build fictional worlds and characters and scenarios, dont care how accurate it is with that lol, just that it may have a different spin on my ideas I like better. My ex and her 150+ IQ couldn't have cared less about this hobby, she thought it was "neat" for a while but was in her way. She could have helped with a lot of the biology and chemistry questions with her bachelors in bioscience and the masters she was working on in the early days. Its very nice to have a mentor or even just a buddy even if they just come over or you go there to share an AB and talk reef stuff.Makes perfect sense - a master/apprentice approach. For me it’s been forums, and more recently ChatGPT which is great for a lot of information, but can’t blindly follow as stated earlier. Definitely not as much fun as having a live person in the room to bounce things off and share an adult beverage with. My wife will only do so much. My daughter who wants to be a marine biologist has very little interest so don’t know what to make of that (roll eyes).
I just checked out you build thread - amazing. How do you manage that many tanks? I can barely keep up with my one nano.As you already know Chatgpt is a great tool just dont believe everything it tells you. You have to crosscheck anything it tells you. I know this is the wrong thread but given your long history in marine aquariums, where do you keep your kH? I’m transitioning from Tropic Marin Classic to Reef Pro which mixes at dkh 7. My LFS maintains 8. I have a 27g cube with a mixed reef (new frags mainly). Is 7-8 good or should I shoot for higher average numbers? Thanks. As you already know Chatgpt is a great tool just dont believe everything it tells you. You have to crosscheck anything it tells you. Anywhere from 7-11 is good. I personally keep mine at 8.5.I know this is the wrong thread but given your long history in marine aquariums, where do you keep your kH? Sorry missed this. Well its not easy but if you set the tanks up right you can save a lot of time on maintenance. But I am slowly getting rid of tanks.I just checked out you build thread - amazing. How do you manage that many tanks? I can barely keep up with my one nano.
