Welcome to Reef2Reef!!! If you start with a saltwater aquarium, then the costs may be a bit higher and the tank may be a bit more demanding, but there will be so many more life skills that she will learn. Starting with a clownfish or a goby may be a good place to start, but she needs to put in the effort as she moves through the learning curve. Good luck with whatever you choose!

Welcome to Reef2Reef!

We'd be happy to try and help you if you want a saltwater tank, but if you're just trying out an aquarium to see if you guys will like it, maybe freshwater is a better fit. You'll learn some skills that transfer over if you want to try saltwater later, and it's quite a bit less expensive. Otherwise, here's a good write up on starting a saltwater tank, and let us know if you have further questions!

Good luck!

Hi,
My daughter wants an aquarium.
I'm totally lost.

She's 11 and I'm not sure she'll take care of the fishies.

What's a good (hardy) starter fish ?
Size of aquarium ?
I'm in Toronto.
Clowns are always a good, easy fish to start with! Tank size? I would go with a 50-75g.

If you’ve never done aquarium, then you probably shouldn’t start with saltwater maybe get a 20 gallon and get small fish like neon tetras and welcome to reef2reef

And if you do go saltwater, remember you will be overwhelmed with all the stuff you have to do every day that’s why I think you should start with freshwater cause I don’t think you’re 11 year-old will do it
