Super excited to get into this hobby. I've had freshwater tanks in the past and it's always been a dream to have a beautiful saltwater tank so here we go!

Super long story short, found an awesome used Red Sea setup that came with a ton of extras like a pair of Radion XR15 Blue G6s with arms, sump, etc. etc. Plenty of extras to make the $500 purchase worth it. Well, had the LFS come out to do setup and as soon as they saw the tank they said it looks like the seal could leak anytime and they dont suggest moving forward. I felt like an idiot since you could obviously see salt buildup in the front seal but honestly I just didnt have experience and didnt know it was an issue.

The seller was a super nice guy who lives just a few streets down on our island so I reached back out to him to see if Red Sea warranty was still valid and it was not, but he ended up just giving me my $500 back and let me keep everything! The tank had been sitting empty in their living room for over a year and his wife was thrilled just to get it out of the house so they weren't too worried about refunding. So that was awesome!

But of course that did mean I had to go find aonther tank and after searching around and researching we went with the Eshopps Mariner 70. The LFS ended up giving us a $200 credit for the tank so we were able to buy it for about $1,800 total. Obviously way more than the $500 we originally thought were spending for everything but its a beautiful tank and we love it so all is good!

Then we went back to the LFS to get all the supplies and spent about another $1,300 between sand, 40 lbs rock, setup fee, 90 gallons of water, etc. etc.

Don't mean to make all this about money, but for anyone new I thought it would be very help to know what kind of realistic costs to expect when mostly all new items.

Now, to the fun stuff! Tank was delivered to LFS on April 3, we picked it up the next day and brought it home. Got it setup (empty) by April 7. LFS setup came out April 10 and its been up and running since! We are obsessed with how beautiful it is so far!

The setup fee was $350 which is definitely steep, but I just wanted that peace of mind since we had never done this before and wanted a pro to make sure it didnt leak. Peace of mind was worth it in my opinion.

My wife has gotten into this as well and she is actually the one who setup all the rock! The LFS guy set it up but was very rushed and she ended up changing things around and its PERFECT now. I love that shes getting in on this and our 3 year old loves it too!

Have added about 5 gallons of freshwater to top off over the last week which is a lot more than I expected, but nothing too unmanageable. Just purchased the cheap RO Buddie RODI system (Amazon product) from Amazon yesterday and am thrilled to no longer need to go to the LFS store for water.

Next steps from here are continue to let the tank cycle, keep the lights off for a few more weeks, and do some significant organization in the cabinet. Haven't done much yet as I have a Red Sea 300 DC skimmer, dual pump controller, Reefwave 45, and Eshopps 5 gallon ATO resevoir all coming in the next week or so. Once I get all of those in and setup I will make things as organized as possible. Goal is to keep EVERYTHING in the cabinet. We will see if that's possible.... I kept the red sea power max powerstrip from the used system I bought and think I might get another for the other top side. Extremely convenient to have the switches front and center and not have to crawl back to unplug if needed.

It will be a pretty tight fit once I get the skimmer in as I will need to move the heaters to the return tank but I think I can make it work.

The beautiful organization in one of the below pics is my inspo. It's a FB marketplace post of a stunning tank currently for sale in Austin.

What do ya'll think so far? Anything I might be doing wrong? Or doing things in the wrong order? Anything you notice in the setup worth mentioning might be in wrong place (like thermometer sensor in return tank, is that ok?) Any tips / advice is appreciated!

Looks like you are starting off on the right foot! I've looked at those Eshopp Mariners before at some of the reefing shows and they are such nice tanks!

How is the tank doing? Photos 🙂
Thanks for asking! Good reminder to do a quick update. Again, my goal is to show EVERYTHING to help any newbie who might come across this what the realistic full costs are, headaches, joys, and everything in between. I'm literally brand new to saltwater so hopefully this helps. Also have a 3.5 year old and a 1.5 year old, full time job, wife, hobbies, so I'm very time constrained and don't give it as much attention as I could. Water changes have been very infrequent admittedly.

TLDR - tank is still awesome and I love it!

The tank has been doing great. I've had some ups and downs and lost a few fish and have quite a few corals that are struggling, but also some that are thriving so hopefully someone can help me out! Here are some pics of it as it sits right now. I REALLY need to figure out how to take better photos. The blue is overwhelming. I even had an orange filter lens on my iphone in these photos.

I will do updates below by coral specifically and then fish specifically. Then have maintenance I've done and what kind of schedule I'm on and keep everything in sections so anyone can skip or scroll to certain spots.

Enjoy!

FISH UPDATES:
Current fish as of right now are:
1. 2 standard clownfish ($30/each - LFS) - (Kevin and Tank)
2. 1 Mocha Storm clown ($100 - LFS) - (Stormi)
3. Dwarf Angelfish (Angel) - ($50ish - LFS)

The angelfish is definitely the most active and entertaining. He/she does very well with the clowns and is a favorite in the tank.

The two standard clowns run together and a few months ago started picking on the mocha storm clownfish which kinda sucks. Now the mocha storm just hangs out in the top right corner of the tank. If she goes towards the center she will get picked on. Tough to watch, but shes still eating well and doing well overall, just doesn't have free range.

None of the clowns seem to have taken to any of the corals which is unfortunate. I guess my Finding Nemo dreams won't be happening!!

We also had 3 blue/yellow damsels originally, but they were ******s. Took them back to the LFS.

Also have 2 emerald crabs, hermit crabs, snails. Something was killing off our big turbo snails. Might get some more as the algea is slowly coming back without them. Maybe it was crabs?
Fish losses:
1. Ruby Red Dragonette ($100ish - LFS) - This was really due to not being experienced enough for this fish. It was so bright red and colorful at the LFS we had to get it. LFS lady said it would eat flakes just fine (nowhere close to being accurate). We were able to get her to survive for about a month trying to seed copepods too. Even bought a small cheap 2 gallon tank off marketplace to try and fatten her backup and feed her bottles of copepods. Lasted a month or so in that tank in isolation but just never really thrived. Will not add again until reseed copepods and have tons of them.
1. Lost our royal gramma ($40 - LFS) - We had a bit of a fish struggle a few months ago and have paused on fish for that reason. We had a Royal Gramma who we absolutely loved. Was introduced with all 3 clowns at the very beginning and thrived for months and months. Then stopped eating and slowly withered away. We had been introducing Goby's and adding corals so I don't know if it just got stressed or angel was picking on it or what happened really. The angel and the royal gramma got along for months before.
2. Lost a spotted Goby ($50ish - LFS) - this is embarrassing but the first one jumped out. It was our first experience with a jumper and the LFS didnt warn us. Def our fault and we now have a lid.
3. Lost another Goby (Banded I think) ($50 - LFS) - Tried another goby after the first and it was awesome for the first day sifting sand like they do and was amazing to watch. Then it went under the rocks and didnt come out for a few days. By the time it finally came out it was already in a death spiral. Very hard to watch.

The current fish have been in since the beginning and have been doing great. Really want to figure out the fish issues so we can add another 4-5 fish and be completely settled in. The goal is to get major color pops from the fish as well.

I have my eye on the below fish to add:
1. Yellow Coris Wrasse
2. Blood / Fire Shrimp
3. Desjardinii Sailfin Tang
4. Harlequin Basslet
5. Tomini Bristletooth Tang
6. Firefish

Any ideas if I will have issues with these given current stock?

CORAL UPDATES:

Biggest lesson after being around for a while is corals at LFS are incredibly overpriced compared to online sites like SBB or TCK. Literally 5x more expensive in a lot of cases to shop at LFS. Very frustrating. I've loved SBB and TCK so far and really don't see any reason to shop at LFS unless just browsing for ideas.

Coral wise, here's EVERYTHING we have so far as of yesterday along with their current condition, estimated time in tank, and price/place of purchase:

1. Pink Bubbletip ($250 - LFS) - (very first coral and love it. Named him "Gary", been thriving since day 1. ~8 months in.
2. Laser Lemon Zoas ($32 - TCK) - looking at the two Zoas this is the bunch on the left. Thriving. ~4 months in.
3. My Clementine Antimatter Combo Zoas ($25 - TCK) - Zoas on the right. Thriving. ~4 months in.
4. Monticap ($60 - LFS) - right below the Zoas, for some reason the bright orange like it was at the LFS hasn't come through and its been a dark brown almost. No clue why. ~6 months in.
5. Bright AF Holy Grail Torch ($165 - SBB) - Thriving. Tank maker. ~2.5 months in.
6. Black Panther Torch ($33 - SBB) - Thriving. Very cool. ~2.5 months in.
7. NY Knicks Torch ($55 - SBB) - Thriving. Very cool. ~2.5 months in.
8. GSP (LFS - $50) - on the far right, thriving. ~8 months in. In since beginning.
9. Orange Indo Hammer ($38 - SBB) - Not as bright as I was hoping for. I'm realizing I simply dont have enough space for dull corals and need BRIGHT bigtime bang for buck corals only given the 70g limited space. ~3 months in.
10. Golden Buddha Hammer ($71 - SBB) - Bright golden glowing yellow, AWESOME! ~3 months in.
11. Blue Tip Hammer ($45 - SBB) - Thriving. ~3 months in.
12. Green Stem Blue Tip Hammer ($46 - SBB) - Thriving. ~3 months in.
13. TCK 50/50 "Salty's Torch" Hammer ($89 - TCK) - Green and purple one, AWESOME!! ~4 months in.
14. TCK Oddball Goni Bernardpora ($27 - TCK) - Was doing well at first but has been closed up for a few weeks. Just moved yesterday so hopefully will get happy again. ~4 months in.
15. TCK Combustion Goni Bernardpora ($34 - TCK) - Fully yellow under the Gonis. Doing ok. ~4 months in.
16. Jack-o-lantern Lepto ($29 - TCK) - On backwall. Not 100% sure how it's doing tbh. Goal is to have the center back wall bright orange with the bright green spots. Time will tell. ~4 months in.
17. Avatar Chalice ($20 - TCK) - Incredible colors. Wouldn't say it's thriving, but doing fine? ~4 months in.
18. JF Dayglo Favia ($17 - TCK) - Bright pink and green, not thriving. ~4 months in.
19. TCK Ultron Favia ($19 - TCK) - Struggling. ~4 months in.
20. TCK Green Joker Lord ($18 - TCK) - Doing ok. ~4 months in.
21. Darth Maul Favia ($11 - TCK) - Doing better than all other favias/lords. ~4 months in.
22. Space Invader Pectinia ($49 - TCK) - Was thriving for months and months, then I moved and BOOM it started shedding its skin and an entire piece had to be removed. Hoping th epiece I have left survives. Tried moving to a gentler light/flow location. Really unfortunate as the GLOWING green with yellow is incredible. ~4 months in. Thriving for 3.5 months until recently when I tried to move it to a more prominent spot due to how amazing it is.
23. Amber Ice Goni ($38 - SBB) - Doing great. ~3 months in.
24. Tidal Ruin Goni ($55 - SBB) - Doing great. ~3 months in.
25. No Name Goni ($20 - SBB) - Doing great. ~3 months in.
26. Red Dragon Goni ($58 - SBB) - Just got this one in yesterday. The red is STUNNING so far. Will take photos once it fully opens and gets a little bigger.
27. Titans Gaze Goni ($31 - SBB) - Same as above. Stunning red so far. Just very small.
28. Green Hulk Frogspawn ($31 - SBB) - Just added yesterday. Green is glowing so far and awesome.
29. Duncan ($30 - SBB) - Has been closed up for months since I got it. Just moved to a completely different spot yesterday in back of tank to see if he will be happy with less light and not much flow. Very disappointing so far. ~3 months in.
30. Mystery Signature Acan ($53 - SBB) - Just added yesterday. Blue colors and looks amazing. Given my favia and lord struggles im worried about it.
31. Budda Bing Acan 2 Heads ($31 - SBB) - Just added yesterday. Light blue and orange looks amazing. Same as above worried for long term.

Wow once you list them all out I can't believe I have gotten 31 corals!! It seems like so much less.

If I could start over from scratch, here are the biggest showstoppers/my top recommendations for newbie friendly centerpieces (based 100% on my experience only):

1. Bright AF Holy Grail Torch ($165 - SBB) - Star of the show. Even with my terrible camera work it pops.
2. Pink Bubbletip ($250 - LFS) - Kind of unfortunate that "Gary" chose the very middle of the tank as he takes up TONS of space. Hasn't gotten as fully bubbly as the LFS one he split from, but still a centerpiece of the tank. He completely closes in on himself sometimes, shrinks, fully expands. Just tons of fun to watch.
3. Golden Buddha Hammer ($71 - SBB) - Just an absolute show stopper. It literally GLOWS.
4. TCK 50/50 "Salty's Torch" Hammer ($89 - TCK) - The green/blueish purple combo is incredible. LOVE
5. Space Invader Pectinia ($49 - TCK) - When healthy absolutely GLOWS bright green in the tank. And the bright yellow on it is truly stunning.
6. Red Dragon Goni ($58 - SBB) - Only had for a day but the deep red is STUNNING.

My coral end game goal for now is to have the Goni garden on upper left. Now that I have the deep red from the Red Dragon im thinking try and get bright orange as well. Then will have a stunning mix of colors. Maybe a green too.

Same for the Hammer garden in center bottom. Would like to get a bright orange and red and replace dull colors then have full color spectrum.

Same for Torch Territory on upper right. The Black Panther is awesome but with such constricted space might replace down the road with some real red pop or orange or something. Will keep corals exactly as is for the next 3+ months and let everything settle in then see how we're doing.

Why are the Favias/Acans/Lords struggling, but Bubbletip, Hammers, Torches, Gonis are all THRIVING!??

Maintenance/Care:
I have really tried to keep this tank with as minimal upkeep as humanly possible. So some of my issues may very well be self inflicted, but I'm just trying to be more of a take care of issues as they arise instead of obsessively doing things. Maybe that will be my downfall. Time will tell.

Water Changes:
Admittedly I am trying to do as little water changes as possible. I am on absolutely no routine here. It's been about 2-3 months since a formal water change. I had read a few things about the "no water changes" strategy and was curious so testing it out.

I noticed my salinity was low around 1.024 a few days ago so for the next two top-offs im adding 1.028 freshly mixed saltwater instead of RODI freshwater. The top offs are about 2 gallons each time it seems. The first got me back to 1.025 so I think the second will get me back where I want at 1.026 salinity. So this basically counts as a water change since im adding saltwater?

I have my 5-gallon eShopps water top off reservoir sitting nicely in the closet and still unused. As of right now ill top off the water with fresh RODI probably every 5 days (about 2 gallons each time). I need at least a full day to even attempt to organize the cabinet and get 5 gallon reservoir in there.

Filter socks:
I still do not use a protein skimmer. I use two filter socks and change them every two weeks. This hasn't been as annoying as people originally made it seem. I just take the socks out, add the two fresh replacements, hose the dirty ones off using the jet setting outside, then wash with bleach in the washing machine. Then they are ready to drop in next round.

Lighting:
I still feel like I haven't dialed in my lighting yet. I have two Radion XR-15 Blues. Currently have them at max color spectrum (20k kelvin) most of the day and up to 70% intensity at peak times. My wife doesn't like the bright blue so we keep a towel draped over to keep light in the tank only. It's a sacrifice im willing to make and she loves the tank.

Only in the last few months is when I changed the spectrum up to the 20k kelvin to get the corals to pop more. Gary the Bubbletip has seemed to really enjoy it, but could this be causing the issues with favias/acans/lords??

I'd be very curious to use lighting from a very experienced successful reefer so if anyone wants to share please do. I've dropped a photo of my current settings and schedule so take a look!

They start coming on around 7:15am and off at 10pm.

Dosing:
I do not dose at all. Again I am trying to avoid doing things just to do them. I do not do anythign special for the corals outside of occassionally giving Gary frozen mysis. However, my Lord/Acan/Favia struggles might be helped by this?

Algea:
I had some bubble algae pop up a few months ago, but two little emerald crabs made quick work of that, pretty cool!

Ill scrape the glass every 4-5 days and thats all I've done. Don't have a huge algea problem and haven't at all yet so fingers crossed that holds. It has seemed to get worse since lighting spectrum change and turbo snail losses so we will see how it plays out.
