Building my first reef tank (40 gallon breeder). I have done about 9 months of research and getting close to getting my tank started. I have gotten a lot of mixed messages regarding quarantining fish. Some do nothing, some observation only, some copper/medicated. I watched the entire BRS series with Elliot from Marine Collectors and decided on using that method as I want to minimize the chances of dealing with ich, brook etc.

Since I will be starting my first tank, it’s a bit of a learning curve even with all my research. For my first pair of clowns that I add after the cycle is complete, what does everyone recommend as far as qt? I want to eventually utilize a medicated protocol but it will be a lot for me to juggle a new tank setup and a medicated qt process that I have never done.

Personally I hated doing quarantine, never seemed to have enough space, takes a lot of time to do it and time away from actual tank. I’ve done it in the past but didn’t have the best set up for it. Now I only choose dr reefs. No worries no problems from quarantining. That’s what I would recommend especially for someone new in the hobby but it’s entirely up to you. If you want to do it yourself get a 20g tank do copper at 2.25ppm for 14days and prazi for another 14 days after copper. Can also through in a week or 2 of observation to be certain. You can also go hyposalinity which I liked as well. Slowly dropped salinity to 1.009 or so and keep it steady there for 30+ days then very slowly raise back up

I checked out Dr. Reef as I was wondering if you could just pay to have someone else qt. I was cautious due to the pricing compared to marine collectors for quarantined fish? Happy to hear that you used them and they were legit

Dr reef is extremely well known and trusted on here by everyone. I currently have an order being quarantined right now. Great customer service and good prices as marine collectors can be very expensive

QT'ing your own fish is easy provided you put a little fore-thought into it and aren't rushed into it during an emergency.

setup and cycle the QT tank ahead of time. QT'ing in an uncycled tank makes it much much harder on both you and the fish. if the QT tank is fully cycled, the process goes so much easier, and with better outcomes.

I do 30 days (min) with Copper Power, along with several doses of praziquantal on all my fish.

I have a single clown in my QT now, with another tang, but they are just about done now with the entire QT process and will be transferred out this weekend.

I had a disease outbreak in my tank less than a year after getting into the hobby. lost a bunch of fish.
I had to QT the survivors and then leave my DT fallow.
ever since then, I've QT'd everything and haven't had any issues since.
I keep my QT system running all the time.

If you have the space and time to deal with keeping a QT tank, then go for it. You will come out ahead in the long run with the knowledge gained, but as some have posted it’s a tedious process.

I definitely want to learn the process, this is more for my first fish I add to the tank. I will be juggling cycling, tank maintenance etc for the first time and don’t want to add QT process to the list but just for my first fish (clowns).
