Good morning,

I have a question about flow in my aquarium. The tank is 60 × 50 × 50 cm and I’m using a Gyre XF330. However, I still have some dead spots in the tank.

I also have a second XF330 that I could add, but that might be overkill. The pump is mounted on the left glass panel, facing slightly upward toward the water surface, and it’s running in pulse mode.

Has anyone had a similar problem? It feels like I can’t get the flow quite right at the moment. Does anyone have suggestions, or maybe a picture of how you’ve set up your Gyre?

Kind regards,
Mitch

you could try and set them on the lowest settings antisync, but yeah 2 gyres is overkill. when i was using a gyre in my IM 50 ext i set it very low like 10-30%max on the mid-top of the tank pointing up and forward. then i added a small wavemaker to the back corner to deal with the dead spots.

IMO its very hard to get good all around flow through the tank with just one source of flow. I use 2 gyres in my 40 breeder (36" wide), before that I used 2 gyres in my 32 gallon before I upgraded to the 40. Just keep them at a low setting.

I have 6 powerheads in my reefer 300 36x22x22" 4 on the back wall and one on each end and still have to blow off rocks. TBH i don't think I've ever been able to get zero spots that could not use a little more flow but usually most detritus settles in a low flow area so I can vacuum that out.

First, keep experimenting with placement. Don't just try copying what you see others do....chances are their setup won't be ideal in your tank since your tank has a different rock/coral layout.

But also, you may have the wrong pump or the wrong size for your tank. I say this because you're trying to "do it all" with one pump....I'm guessing, but often that would mean you bought the pump that had "enough GPH" for the whole tank.

Last, for practical reasons it almost always takes at least two pumps to flow a tank very well. IMO put in the second pump (after downsizing if needed) and see how that goes.
