Hey everyone, I am at my wits end with this. In December I upgraded from a 30 gallon tank to a 75 and transferred everything over. I am confused as to wherever I put my frogspawn, it never completely opens up like it did in the 30 gallon. Here is a graph of all the places I tried, it was in each place for, at the very least, a month with different flows and lighting. Any ideas? May Duncan is perfectly fine and has grown 5 new heads since putting him in the tank. I see a feather duster at the base, could that be it? Anything helps, thanks.

Nitrate: 5ppm
Phosphate: 0.03
Dkh: 8.0

Awful photo because it wasn’t the subject, my cleaner shrimp was (may he rest in peace), but this is how opened up it used to be in my old tank.

Very frustrating indeed! Frogspawn can be super picky, especially after a tank upgrade. Even through you're trying different spots with different floe and light levels the 75g tank may have different parmeters and gradients than your 30g did. Perhaps it is not the placement but how the light is diffused or how the water flow pattern is dispersed In the larger space. Sometimes corals just take a long time to adjust after a move and need more time than we expect.

It is a good sign that your Duncan is doing well...could just be a very temperamental frogspawn.

dId anything change in your parameters after the upgrade?

Well my older tank had just a canister filter, as opposed to my now sump with a protein skimmer and even a refugium, so the nitrates ran much higher at around 20-25 ppm on the old tank. That could possibly be it then? Also, then is it ok to move my frogspawn back to the left circle? That’s where I originally had it and would have preferred to have it haha.

What kind of light is it? An AI Prime? Only one over a 75? If yes the AI Prime is not strong enough for the tank.

Did you match the alk when you moved the coral over? If not it might need time to adjust.

The flow would surely be different so again would need time to adjust.

Just a few ideas on the top of my head but I’m just guessing without more info.

It sounds like the frogspawn is simply taking longer to adjust to the new setting. A month is a bit long, but certainly not out of the ordinary.

New flow, sudden change of parameters, light etc. I’d place it where you’d like, ensure there is enough flow but not too powerful, keep your parameters in check and wait it out. 👌🏽

I have two AI primes, but yeah as someone mentioned I’m leaning towards adjustment. I started doing less water changes than I used to in my 35 and recently realized I would have to supplement Alk since i wasn’t supplementing via water changes. My decision on less water changes in the new tank was because nitrates were starting to bottom out as I kept doing weekly changes, but the recent realization led me to look into Alk more. Don’t remember the Alk levels of the old 35 off the top of my head.

Will do, thanks :)
