GHA - New Tanks?

I had to battle GHA for 6 months but my tank was new. I always wondered, does GHA just take over new tanks or does it happen to established tanks that are 1+ year old? So do you ever have a tank that is going well for 1+ year and then suddenly get GHA taking over everything?

Absolutely not related to tank age.

I could generate gha in the most perfect tank on this forum with the best algae scrubber if I just shine my old 6500 k metal halide planted tank bulb right down low on the display

Every tank has the potentiation for gha depending on conditions... It's just new tanks typically don't have the balances in place that large tanks do to keep it at bay

Gha should be hand removed at any stage it's seen, new or old, for pure control over the scape where nothing can take over


Many choose to let it subside naturally but many of those tanks get really bad. No tank gets bad if it's simply not allowed. It's a matter of chances taken.

A sea hare would also take care of the issue but after its gone you ether have to take him back to the store or feed algae wafers. Took about 4 weeks for him to totally rid my tank of GHA and it was bad. The worst algae outbreak I have had in my 5 years of reefing. It was do to the new rock I bought for my new tank being un-cured.
