As the title states, I’m going to the beach. I plan to grab some rock to add to my tank. I love adding diversity. I will get some NSW for my tank. Keeps the fish healthy. But I always see these tiny fish along the shoreline. I’m thinking whether I should scoop some up and add them as food or not. Any thoughts? I know that anything near the shore is considered as being dirty but I’m sure it’ll be fine.

Make sure you know the laws in your area. Taking rock is often illegal
Thanks. Where I live, I could take the entire ocean if I wanted. But I’m only taking small rocks from the water. I liken it to taking seashells.

As far as keeping the fish you catch, I would suggest that you quarantine them like you would with any fish. Additionally, I would recommend that you figure out what they are before you bring them home in order to provide appropriate care and that they are not endangered. I realize that HK may have different laws but there is still an ethic of care as a steward of animals. One possibility is to take a clear container to take pictures and then doing your research (and even involving us) to determine the species. Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Thanks for sharing! What's the worm/cucumber looking thing?

How is it living there with the current political situation? Very neat to interact with hobbyists around the world.

More pics of what you find please! Im not close by any means to the ocean, love seeing pics of what people find in the oceans and diving!

It’s a fireworm. Tons of them when they spawn. They make the beach uninhabitable.

As for politics... it’s crazy. Lots of protests. Hong Kong is basically separate from China. But the local government is trying to get closer to China and the people here are not having it. Lots of clashing between police and protesters. Last week, a mob jumped on a train and started beating protesters up. Sad. A fellow reefer on this forum is on the frontlines as we speak.

A friend of mine from HK is diving in Indonesia at the moment. He keeps sending me crazy pics of his dives. I’m sooooo jealous. Beautiful stuff. He’s also on r2r. I hope he posts pics. Or I’ll post all of his pics he sent and call them my own.

I kind of follow Paul B’s method of no qt. I just throw things in. I live and let be. I never have fish deaths. Ever. I do kill corals however :p But I guess it’s just me.

Wow, I would not want to step on that!

I saw news coverage of the white shirt mobs this week, crazy stuff. Stay safe!

Thanks. It’s stranger than fiction. To be an American here is wild. Fortunately the chaos is controlled and away from me. But it’s hard to watch. I feel for the people here. My wife being one of them.

I'd be leery of pests otherwise lucky you to have access to natural rock from the ocean !!

I do the same thing. Let nature work itself out.

Selecting rock from the ocean has the potential to introduce unwanted pests into your aquarium, quarantine everything would be your safest bet.
IMO, the ocean is the ocean. I’ll let nature have a go.
