Hello everyone
I have a bit of problem with my goniopora.
I bought them around 6 months ago, its two different colors on one rock. The one side never really opened, the other just opened a bit, i tried a few different locations, but not sure if its a problem with location or with water parameters or anything? Its slowly getting smaller and i really want it to get healthy again.
It currently looks like this, and has a little bit of bubble algae growing on it. I will remove this manually later today.

This was when it first arrived.

Current parameters are:
Alk 7.3
Mag 1360
Calc 410
Nitrate 20
Phos 0.1
Temp 26C

The parameters are mostly stable for the last few weeks.

Currently the coral gets medium flow, its in the middle of the tank on the sandbed, and gets about same lighting as my blastomussa, which absolutely took off with growing.

Any help is appreciated!

According to my last ICP my manganese was not detectable, since then i started dosing AFR and dosing it based on calcium consumption, as directed on the product.
This should contain manganese as well right? I did not do an ICP since then

Pictures would certainly help, but IME experience, goni's like more light than blasto's, blasto can live in almost no light. They also like good flow, they will close up if the flow is too low.

Not much help here. I have 5 different gonis. 3 are always extended and happy. The other 2 have rectracted and come back a couple of times.
The retracted period can be months. So dont give up.
i dose manganese at least 3x perweek.

Thanks for your input. I see them extended from time to time, what im worried about is the size of the coral itself, it seems to turn to stone?

I only have those 2 little gonies, do you think it would make sense to dose manganese? That the AFR cant cover it? I will try to do another ICP after moving the tank in 2 weeks and check my levels.

And i will remove the bubble algae manually when i get to it soon

I have 3 gonies in my 15.
I also dose manganese in my ato.
I use ez-trace.
Gonies will retract when bothered.
Are any invertebrates bothering it?

I guess i will really look into dosing some manganese then, and i will check for a place with higher light.
I have some hermits that love to climb on everything, but so far i havent seen them bothering the gonis. Doesnt mean that they dont.
I will try to find a better location for it

Look at ez-trace. Very little is needed. I run 5ml a day in my 150.
It keeps all 6 elements in range per icp tests.

In both pics its blowing the same direction, is that just coincidence or is it the way your flow is configured? The polyps should sway back and forth in random flow. The coral looks fine but it wouldn't like to be pulled one way.

Yea true. I have my powerhead to pulse on/off every 10 seconds. Works well with the 10 second pause.
It looks like you have a gyre on one side. Flow looks to be in one direction?

This is full tank shot from this morning. I have a red sea reefwave 45 in the red circle with the following config:

20251012_181949_A62CCA04-8995-46C2-922F-3C79355EA074.png

In the yellow circles are 2 tunze powerheads, blowing to the outside and then front. They are on pulses, but sadly the controllers can not be adjusted anymore becausw the knobs broke off and the buttons dont really work anymore, so i just left it since most of the corals seem fine with the flow.
But now that you mention it, it does seem like it gets most flow just from one side

Get those knows replaced. I keep 4-5 on hand. It's the weak link.
Very easy to replace.
Mount 1 Tunze on the side opposite the gyre.

Can't help with the goni because I can't keep them. I did want to stop by and mention everyone I know including @Randy Holmes-Farley dose AFR based on alk consumption not calcium regardless of the instructions from TM. I've been using AFR for over 2 years in my SPS tank and i have always dosed to maintain my alk level.
I target 8 -8.5 dkH

When I ran A4R I did the same based on alk. New 112 will be A4R and Kalk.

Thanks for that input! I was thinking of doing that too, but the instructions persuaded me to dose according to calc.

I saw my alk dropped lightly so i upped the dose anyway, i guess i will focus on that for now. Maybe that will help with manganese too?

Will do that! I will move my tank in 2 weeks and rearrange the rock works, i planned one big central island and then sprawl out to the sides, with caves. I was already thinking of moving the gyre to the side and let them face each other.
Do you think pulse on the tunze and the config i have on the reefwave are good?

Flow is making me anxious and i try to avoid fiddling with it too much because i worry i will make it worse

I'm not sure TBH. I've never tested for it.

How your gonio after coupke weeks? I have couple gonio and i notice they open more with less flow and less light, specially, when they new. After when they are more open and adapte to your system you can give more flow and more light gradually. Maybe try less flow?
