We're talking anemones and clownfish this week so today let's dial in on some anemone talk! Many of us love anemones. The way they look, the way they eat. The way they move in the water column, their colors and more. But not all anemones are suitable for a reef aquarium environment. Let's talk about this today!

What anemone have you found to be a good fit for a reef aquarium?

Do you currently have an anemone in your reef tank and if so which one?

I tried a Hawaiian Punch bta, I was so paranoid that it was going to swim into the powerhead that I put a breeder net over the powerhead. Little did I know this was reducing the flow too much and resulted in the death of the nem. Very expensive lesson learned.
I’ll try one again soon.

Well, it’s 50/50 with me between no it didn’t work and yes it worked as I’ve tried 2 types of anemone and one is thriving.

I have tried a sweet sized pale green and blue tipped BTA before and it died unfortunately. This was 8/13 months back (Probably closer to 9/10) in my 4’ tank and it passed after being in the tank and happy for about 3-5 months.
Wish I had photos of it but I can’t remember which it was in the store as I have about 3/4 photos of BTAs in my LFS to see what looked better.

My current anemone is a mini maxi that is thriving and has been for the past 2 years.

If I ever come across one id love to attempt either a sebae anemone or a condylactis anemone.

I have an island of H. magnifica and S. gigantea anemones. They do get huge, so it's important to have a large tank. They also will move when feeling crowded out, so keeping them on an isolated island so they can't move across the tank is also critical. I sure do love them though and the clowns get easily lost in all the tentacles.

I voted other, as I'm interested just not sure if they are a good fit for my tank. I pose another question.... Are aneomes a good fit for SPS-dominated tanks? I just bought two baby clowns (Currently in QT) they were hosting a really nice rainbow bubletip at my LFS, just not sure if bubbletips are a good fit for an SPS dominated tanks?

I've always had really good experiences with Rock Flower Anemones and decent experience with Bubble Tip Anemones.

I’m successfully keeping in the same system rbtas (wild & sunbursts), gbtas, rock flowers, carpets, colonial nems (aka zoas) and sadly aptasia. I do run carbon 24x7

Rock flowers that have never moved and 6 or more large bubble tips with a pair of clowns here. Also have 5 bubble tips in the sump as that's where they go when they start moving until I can take them into the LFS. Them moving has been the result of them getting large and becoming crowded I believe but I have never had one cause any harm. Haddoni on the other hand cost me several hundred dollars in lost fish. That was due to my ignorance. Center light just came on. The ones in the sump have better color exept my red one probably due to the lighting. They look better under a black box than radions and hydra tho the pics don't show their true color :crying-face:
