Something has been hacked to allow them in. Whether it’s an ad from someone else or even the bots attacking the site
So, presumably the advertisers we’re seeing plastered everywhere are aware that their ads are being distributed via this “method”?

How else did the ads get onto this site? I've asked @revhtree, maybe they can answer better than you. Thanks.
Again what's wrong with you? You don't know Reef2Reef very well if you're implying this is intentional. Administration is working on it and they are not are at your beck and call.

Hold tight everyone. Ive reached out to @revhtree and hopefully should have an answer soon. This doesnt seem like something that would be done on purpose. It may be a feature on the new server that they were unaware of and didn't get turned off.

That’s not my understanding of how ads work, but if you have some inside knowledge that the rest of use don’t then please state that. If @revhtree has indeed been hacked then I assume they would be able to let us know. Also apologies for the late response, it took me a while to navigate around the ads….

It would take me a week and them some to fully explain. I have over a decade of direct experience in this industry.

In short — The advertisers you are seeing aren’t targeting R2R directly. They’re bidding into ad exchanges, and the placement engine decides where ads show up based on things like CPM/CPC/CPI bids, user data, remarketing signals, and site inventory. Depending on the platform, the site owner may have some control over categories, but not much more, and it really doesn’t matter. Let me explain why.

It’s a network of networks. There are multiple exchanges and intermediaries all passing inventory along to each other. There is no direct pairing between a specific advertiser and this site. Ads often get arbitraged through multiple networks. The system is ripe for abuse.

The large issue is quality and enforcement. Malvertising, phishing creatives, auto-redirects, and ads that purposefully escape their containers pose a tremendous problem across programmatic ad networks. It is a war of controls and bad actors. Just like any other digital realm where money is involved. They are hard to track down and the “bad” ad may only be live intermittently, lost in the shuffle doing its thing. Some networks care, others don’t, but that doesn’t matter. It is a futile game of whack-a-mole.
