Run at high flow rate for awhile so "The Bag" can catch the tiniest particles on end of output tube in the sump.

Ok,
The Purigen beads have some micro bubbles, in it that they are attached to some of the beads.
So I keep the above swirl flow rate and media height running over night so the attached micro bubbles can un-attach from the beads.
Then I can adjust up the flow one more time to reach the final media swirl and height.

One benefit of running bare bottom.

I do have a Gyre. :)

0708171234.jpg

So once a week I turn it up to max speed. This lifts out most of the detritus from the live rock pores. It keeps it floating in the water column until it gets caught in the filter sock or comes to a rest on the bare bottom floor. I also use my small mixing pumps at the same time to blow over each rock in all directions but since I have the Berghia nudibranchs in the rock work at the moment. Then I'm only using the Gyre until the Berghia nudibranchs have knocked out all of the Aiptasia.

When I feel like the pumps have done the job over several hours and the water column has cleared then I shut off all the pumps and siphon out the remaining detritus from the bare bottom floor with the python (No Spill) while doing the weekly water change.

If I (still) had a sand bed, it would only turn into a huge sandstorm with this much flow.

Suspended detritus. :)

Filter sock is filling up with the suspended detritus and skimmer's skimmate is kicking in.
