I didn't grok the rationale for suspended Purigen until now. Very cool.

The matrix results are interesting. I run siporax in the sump while many run marinepure with our minimal rock scape. But have we recreated the whole nitrate factory problem again? Back when we had 1-2lbs of fiji per gallon, didn't have these issues. Yet it takes a long time for the NO3 -> Nitrogen bacteria to establish, much longer than the 'cycle' and by then people are already doing biopellets, carbon, or increasing inhabitants. I haven't read good articles on how much the nitrates are removed by bacteria in mature tanks. So many other variables are also in play.

Your purigen is also a great example of how each reef tank is different. The amount you run, packing density, and flow thru the purigen is related to your water volume, inhabitants, feedings, and maintenance volume.

Boo! I'm actually in the market for either a single or pair of harliquin shrimp
I feel the pain too. :(
They were the coolest shrimp that I've ever had.
They even climb to the top of rock work, jump off and ride the current to different area's of the reef... like little parachutes. :)
But... When I saw them doing that during lights on, then I knew I had to take them back. :(

It was a fun 8 or 9 months with them and (lol) the reef shop was more than happy to take them back in.
They are usually sold with-in 24 hours. :D

Hey Freddie, lots of good info! I've been debating on using purigen for a while now. I've heard too many "not so good" things about the Matrix and doubt I will be going down that path.

It is great to see that the nudibranch's are doing an excellent job! My aiptasia are out of hand in one tank and in the 180 the ones I do have are getting quite sizable. I'm going to have to do something pretty soon but I don't want to give them a shot of Aptasia X because that's how they spread in the other tank. It's going to be a few weeks before I can actually spend some money on them though, have other priorities first.

I love my harlequin shrimp he did an excellent job on the 180 and the only thing that can be found a real high and real small. However I have some in another tank so if I must I will move him to that tank.

Your tank is looking great :D
Jackie,
Over the last days I can not tell how the nudibranch's are doing one way or the other.
Waiting it out to see if they move to other area's of the reef and start mowing down again. Kinda in a ;Nailbiting stage for me at this time.

Got home from work this evening and our starfish just happened to be in right position to take a shot.
As you can see our harlequin shrimp never took a single bite out of it.
So, This is our starfish. :)

Thank you.

Reef Shop called it a marble but gotta be about a thousand names for it.
If you go LiveAquaria looks like a (Fromia indica).
When I took the shrimp back Monday. I looked over their starfish but nothing to make me pull the trigger.

(lol) It's a quick mover and is already around the backside of the reef. So I took a quick shot while I had the chance. A lot of the time it hangs around the top of the tank.

Today's update:
Have not done my weekly water change, yet.
Have not checked phos. and nitrates for along time. So, Just checked them.

Phos. = .025 (Hanna ULR checker)
Nitrates = 4.5 (Salifert)

On next re-charge going to cut GFO dose back from 1 cup to 3/4 cup. :)

Used to use the math formula for the ULR, but (lol) found this chart and it's spot on.

Did you take any measures to encourage the tangs to coexist peacefully?
No, They are buddies but they do have different body shapes and added the pbt last. :)

O-Tay,
Due to the phos. and nitrates.... (plus) @MrMichael / @SPR1968 putting a gun ;Dead to my head. :)
All the sudden a fish dropped into my shopping chart on Divers Den (WYSIWYG). :D

If you don't know, it's a very small "Australian Stripey".
DD says not reef-safe but I have never had one eat any of my corals.
They may not look like much but theses fish have the funnest personality.
(lol)... It's like having "SpongeBob SquarePants" in your reef.

spongebob-nick.jpg

They are very hard to find and have been waiting for one to pop up at my local reef shop or DD for along time.
So, Took a deep breath and pulled the trigger.

Now, It's time for the weekly water change. :)

Regards, GoVols

Totally makes sense since you already have his starfish buddy in the tank. Never seen this fish before, looks pretty cool.

Good to know they're still on the job! [emoji1]
I must admit, that I'm happy and "pumped up". :D

Jackie,
Thank you so much for taking the time to take the ride with me.

Hopefully when it's all said and done, it can help you and others down the line no matter what the final verdict is.

Freddie
