This is a stolen pic but exactly what I have in mind. I’m going to be making a wooden surround for two OR T247 LED’s and two T5’s front and back. I would like to make it appear to be floating. I am very familiar with drywall anchors but in walls not the ceiling. What is the best way to mount in ceiling dry wall?

Depends on how heavy the canopy is going to be. I suppose you could use heavy duty drywall anchors, but I’d not personally trust them. Usually I use a mounting board (painted white to blend into the ceiling) that catches at least one joist. On my current tank I actually used ceiling mounting boards stained to match the canopy.

The best way would be to try to find the joist if possible. It is pretty much the same as hanging something on the wall. It will only be as strong as the drywall. If the load is static there is less chance of having an issue with anchors and you can find some that are rated up to 80 pounds. If you plan on adjusting the lights or put any other weight on it from time to time is when you may have an issue. Something like a toggle bolt from Home Depot will work as it is rated for about 80 pounds. Everbilt 1/4 in. x 3 in. Zinc-Plated Toggle Bolt with Round-Head Phillips Drive Screw (10-Piece)

I agree. If you can't find the joist, this is probably how I would mount it

So here is the big problem. I’m not sure what’s under that hump. I would have done a mounting board but I have this.

Try to find a stud in the ceiling to anchor too. If not get the biggest toggle bolts you can find. Not sure how much weight it will be. Also don't forget to check the max load on the cables. You would be surprised how heavy a canopy can get

i used a single profile t-slot over mine. it's attached to the joist in the ceiling in three spots. i had planned on painting it with ceiling paint lol! but you know how that goes... i chose this method in case my lighting changes over the life of the tank, i can easily swap out to other fixtures without having to drill/repair more holes in the ceiling.

In such a case, I would consider having the back of the canopy hard mounted to the wall and running the support cable from the front of the canopy to a point on the wall that is high enough to provide good support.

I have mine floating off the wall. I used door hinges to allow access. Chains are there for worst case scenario but no load is on them..

I used eyelets screwed into driller toggles. Then used doorknob stoppers for a cleaner look. I just wish our house didn’t have the popcorn ceilings.

I am an commercial hvac installer and that could be duct work i wouldn't try and open that up or puncture it. That's just my visual though. Who knows

I did follow it back and it goes into our air unit room and It is in fact the duct. I cant tell if it has studs around it or not though. Its looking like I might have to make arms that come off the wall.

So just a thought. I recently put a TV up in my sons room. The swivel mount I used supposedly holds up to 99lbs of TV 19" from the wall.

How much weight can I support off of a 3/4" threaded floor flange with conduit mounted to a wall board mounted to studs? I prefer not to use braces if its possible. I cant imagine the fixture weighing more that 20-30 lbs.

I would do a small probe to determine if there is framing around the duct.
If there is framing I would remove the sheetrock between the studs and install either solid wood or plywood blocking, then reinstall the sheetrock, tape and paint. You want the blocking between the studs so the sheetrock can go back in the same plane it was previously.

It will be framed out Every 16 inchs on center sk they could hang the sheet rock. So around 16inches from the wall there should be one. This is a generalization. Once you find one stud keep going until you see a pattern of spacing

I would mount something like this on the wall.
Make sure you get it fastened into studs.
No wires hanging down, and you dont have to mess with your ceiling.

Not sure if I missed something along the thread but there should be 2x4 wood studs behind the wall that you can attach to. Usually 24” centered apart. You can pick up a stud finder at Home Depot, Lowe’s, etc. Good to have on hand for various projects.
