Although I really like my scape, I just realized that it would probably be better if I use the same scraper but flipped it 180 degrees. The scape I have right now is concave, which provides a lot of shadowy space in the middle, which limits me on coral selection (but not really) and the back side is convex, but there are a lot more spots that don’t get super bright light like the front of my tank. Don’t take me wrong, I really like my scape, but just a “what if” scenario popped into my head recently. Tell me if this has happened to you ever.

every day. but as this is my first tank, I cut myself some slack. I kind of made caves, which I like, but have no island, almost no available sand, and few stacked rocks available for coral. also none of them are glued, which makes things even more interesting...

Just to let everyone know there is another option - Went to a pro to help with aquascape - @StourysReef. His design allowed me to optimize coral placement. Very reasonably priced and very happy with the results.

Aquascape are one of those things that will never be perfect because you can see the worst in the things that you’re surrounded by constantly. Very similar to the whole tank itself
I fall into the “ everyone else’s looks better than mine” trap. I’ve never been super happy with my scapes for no real reason
Same as what I said above^

I wanted to get somebody to do my scape professionally, but I don’t have the money for that. I’m glad I didn’t because I feel like the scape it my piece of artwork, and not someone else’s. On the other hand, my shadowing issue may not have been a problem if I did.

Yes that's why I went NSA on my next build. Very happy with the result. But coral placement and growth pattern can change the original scape.

Very true. I didn’t realize it at the time but my scape was very similarly related to the NSA Scape, although I didn’t cut up pieces or even know I was doing a scape similar to it. Forgot to add a pic of mine when I made this post but now it’s on the original post

Your scape is nice! But you can see what the limiting factor is. It's still big rocks on rocks so it creates a lot of undesired shadow. With NSA and building it from rubles, you wouldn't have the big rock on the right that blocks out 1/3 of the tank.

Very true unfortunately. There are still small spots with light in some spots so I’m planning to put low light corals in those areas and seeing if they will naturally spread into those lowest light areas, although I’m unsure if they will. May become the underside of montipora overhangs

Yes I did, and I did something about it. Took out the middle rock area that I disliked. Had to cut off 8 encrusted acros, reglued them to the new structure. Only lost 1, and it was mehh anyway. Ended up with a much better looking middle rock, and more spaces for acros.

I really appreciate the kind words @PeterC99 , Aquascapes are really fun for me and I definitely enjoy the process of putting them together. Here is something I just put together this past weekend for a tank reset. The tank was over taken by several aggressive unattractive fast growing corals so we reset it.

Here are a few before and afters.

Build "low" and leave room above. I've done it wrong several times.

In the end, go with less rock. Go lower (bottom 2/3rds only) and use real live rock to avoid ages of uglies. Then you can stock anything early and run the circulation pumps hard along the top and everyone gets food and gas exchange just as nature intended.
