so it may have been stung by a nearby mushroom when one of my hermits pushed the mushroom rock into the clam.

I really would like to have a clam but this is really discouraging.

another BigAls has some clams too and I saw a couple that looked very healthy, I think I would like to try again but I'm scared

and because I'm an idiot and a masochist, I went and got another one that looked healthy.

this one is from a different BigAls and is about 3 inches I think.

I hovered over the employee and made sure he was careful when taking it out of the tank, and I think this one is doing pretty good. I can actually see its foot sometimes when it's really open.

I immediately put it high up on the rocks as well so it's getting more light and out of the way of any stingers.

it seems to be open a lot more and healthier than the last one so fingers crossed it's gunna stay that way.

picture coming soon

That’s not a big wad of epoxy putty you plastered that thing to is it? They need to attach on their own. Which is sometimes hard to do. Don’t be too bummed about the other one though. I have a 15 year old derasa clam and 2 gigas growing like weeds yet I cannot keep a maxima for more than a year.

lol no I took a frag disk and tried to make a clam cradle like one I saw in a LFS by rolling a global of epoxy into a snake and surrounding the frag disk, shaping it into sort of a clam shaped bowl if you will

the LFS took the clam out of the water, did you make sure to burp the clam? a good LFS will never take the clam out of the water. you should request it next time.

Taking a clam out of the water won't cause any damage to a tridacna. Burping is a good idea but I wouldn't say the clam should not be removed from the water and only a good fish store would bag under water. @eggplantparrot that new maxima looks really nice! Love the mantle color.

Good luck with this one I have one coming from ORA Tuesday same ultra gold coloring and I am excited. Stinks about the other one, the filaments are so sensitive if they where separated quickly and they ripped usually it’s only a matter of time before they die. Make sure your new one is in a spot you will never want to move it from so when it attaches it stays put. Do you have a fts where you can see the placement? I run similar lights and Want to see where yours is happy light height wise. Loving the colors of the second one I hope I get so lucky

this is the most recent pic I have on hand.

unfortunately this one looks like it may possibly have PMD. ugh, this is really discouraging. I'm hoping it's just not liking my new wavemakers set up (2 mp10s, not shown in pic) and is acclimating, but one side doesn't look right.

hope you have better luck than me.

Well regardless of the clam you have an insane looking tank. Whatever you are doing is working! Sometimes you just can’t get one thing to live when everything else is looking great. I must admit that I have gone through my share of maxima back in the day when at the same time had a derasa for 3 years and went through all sorts of tank issues. I hope it comes back for you. Have you looked up a fresh water dip?

yea I'm surprised my tank is looking as good as it is. after all the stuff I put it through, at one point 3 AAA batteries fell into the sump and turned to grey goo and my doser leaked and dumped 300ml of calcium on the same day. my prized piece of 5$ acropora mini colony slowly died, but after a few months it's coming back from the dead from 1 branch lol. everything is colorful and growing but I guess it's just human nature to want more, and for me it's this dang clam right now.

I was planning on doing the freshwater dip but then noticed it looked a bit better, which was what made me think it may be because it didn't like the new flow I set up yesterday. I haven't really changed anything else recently so I don't really see a stressor that would cause PMD

I did my weekly water change and changed out the carbon too, read it helps with PMD, somthing to do with binding the iron in the water that the protozoan that causes PMD uses. I don't have a reactor so its in a filter bag floating passively in the return section.

Personally, I don't think he was getting enough light. They slowly starve to death if they're not getting light.

IMG_20191230_174555.jpg

this guy was doing so well, I even saw growth, and suddenly this is what it looks like...

I'm preparing some RODI up to temperature and doing the freshwater dip. should I do a full 20min?

I'm not sold on PMD, it looks withdrawn but how long has it been like that?
