I was under the impression that G2 and G3 Red Sea tanks shared the same plumbing!

At least, that’s what I’ve inferred from others whom had a G2 fail in warranty, and have received a G3 as “glass only” from RS, with the expectation to reuse their plumbing!

Is it possible that the ratcheting lock mechanism between each standpipe and the bulkhead pass-through plastic are giving you trouble?

(If we can work out which style of plumbing this tank actually uses, I happen to have 3 sets of used overflow plumbing for G1/G2 R350-R525)

I just did some digging on this issue:

— it looks like G3 does indeed use a different thread pitch for the bulkhead pass-through fitting on each standpipe vs. G1/G2 (except for some very late model G2+ examples)

— the confusion with RS sending “glass only” warranty tanks and asking owners to reuse old plumbing is relative to which part of the plumbing is being used; RS sends the “glass only”G3 with overflow plumbing preinstalled. They retained the same “union” threads on the bottom of each standpipe pass-through union, allowing the user to couple older G1/G2 in-cabinet plumbing to G3 tank plumbing!

— this means you do indeed need to get proprietary G3 overflow box plumbing before you can adapt to G1/G2 in-cabinet plumbing….

Alternatively, I happen to have documented a full process to delete the factory RS nonsense in the overflow box, swapping it all for Imperial plumbing parts and quality Hayward bulkhead fittings, if you’re curious?

There's a reason people sell new warranty replacement RS tanks I guess.
I would also recommend not using the redsea diagram valve even the new style used on G2s are terrible to adjust IME. I would go ahead and plumb in a good gate valve while your working on things to replace the RS valve.

RS actually gave up on their terrible diaphragm valve for G3, and finally switched to a traditional gate valve (which they of course dubbed the “ReefGate” to confuse the uninitiated into thinking was some other form of black magic)!

That sounds like RS. They do have an awesome marketing department I'll give them that.

Thanks for the reply mate so I got the tank 2nd hand all the pipe work that came says its for a g2 but definitely doesnt fit and the main issue is the bulkhead size on the g3 display is alot bigger than what generation pipe I have if you have something that would be amazing and happy to pay if you could check what size the bulkhead connection is on the sump side we might be able to figure it out

I did email them about this issue saying how can you exp8to replace a tank under warranty and then not have the tank to be usable due to different connections

So there’s no plumbing installed inside your overflow box? — these are the parts proprietary to G3… only the in-cabinet plumbing will adapt from G1-G2 to G3….

Red Sea sumps do not have any bulkhead fittings on them, pipes just go directly into a sump drain chamber which overflows into filter socks!

All the Red Sea plumbing I have is for G1/G2, and would not fit your overflow box, sadly… I personally dislike how Red Sea does their overflow plumbing/bulkheads and have since started adapting to standard plumbing parts whenever possible, as mentioned above!

Correct mate you'd think they would atleast include inside the weir which I dont know if it was a error or they are that stupid to then expect people to have to source them fortunately the guy I bought it off is a amazing bloke and has found everything from a supplier in China and has paid for it all and refused to let me pay him back or split it
