Urgent Help Needed Randy please…..

Trying to increase magnesium levels to increase calcium and I just completed Red Sea magnesium test and level currently 790. Based on this I added 95 ml of magnesion by brightwell aquatics. 120 gallon tank with 15 gallon sump but I am afraid I may have overdosed the tank. Randy if you are available should I do massive water change or will I be okay?

Please advise as I done want to wake up tomorrow to all dead fish and coral

Others please advise so I could take action now.

Do water change first then test to determine how much of a drop water change is providing.

Try a different Magnesium Test and also check your salinity with a CALIBRATED device.

The Mag level you have posted is most likely an error

At least with Salifert, I remember they note that when your calcium is out of range, the Magnesium test will not produce reliable results.

Yes and even take a water sample to an lfs and see what readings they come up with preferably taken with a Non- Api test and also note, risk is greater with low magnesium than high magnesium

Ridiculous that someone asks for help and just gets a bunch of welcome posts instead.

To the OP, it is HIGHLY unlikely your magnesium is that low unless your salinity is terribly off. At that point all other parameters would be off as well

Overdosing magnesium is very little concern. Like zero concern. It takes A LOT of solution to raise magnesium.

I would start with a test kit error as magnesium tests are notoriously inaccurate and unreliable. If you can, have another hobbyist or local fish store test your magnesium as well. You can also make up a gallon of new water and test it.

Also, make sure you read the plunger correctly. Some tests have you read how much reagent you used and other have you read how much reagent is left. The results will be drastically different if you read it wrong

Welcome to Reef2Reef!!! Accurate testing is key. You may want to take your water to a LFS or send in an ICP kit to confirm your magnesium. While your corals may not be in optimal condition, it is unlikely that your fish will pass due to a moderate variance in magnesium. Good luck!
