Help regarding Cyano

The readings are most likely from cyano eating the available nutrients, so im not to confused about it :) Im gonna go ahead and keep dosing KNO3 for 2 weeks, if no results are seen when i come back from greece ill go ahead and start H2O2 dosing :)

Woke up the next day and again noticed some cyano growing back. Not as much this time. So I did my po4 test with hanna checker. FINALLY!! I got a phosphate reading of 0.07. From here I know it's a phosphate issue and I can now begin clearing i out. 0.07 is high and so, it's something I should worry about.

I know this is a bit off-topic, but I was considering buying the Hanna Phosphate checker. I have read very mixed reviews, both positive and negative. The biggest complaint seems to be in getting the reagent out of the container and into the vial. I own their Alk checker and love it, but it looks like the PO4 checker uses a powder reagent, rather than a liquid? Other PO4 checkers are painfully hard to read (API was a nightmare, good luck if your eyesight is bad). Can you comment on your experience? Would you recommend?

Ironically, I am also asking because I am battling a horrible amount of cyano and I am ready to rip my HAIR out! Cyano took down my last tank - IT WILL NOT TAKE THIS ONE DOWN TOO! :(

i love my hanna, its pretty consistant if you are meticulous with keeping the equipment clean and getting the reagent in etc. Its not to hard, there is a guide on youtube for the phos hana checker, go check it out. :)

I just battled cyano for three months and lost. Water changes, vacuumed sand, flow, bulbs everything checked. Finally I had enough of siphoning it all the time so I used chemi clean. I was so paranoid about dosing it. But it deft has worked with no loses to anything. I would for sure use it again. I would say it's definitely reef safe. The only down fall is the skimmer doesn't work for ever and just continues to overflow.

I have been dosing H2O2 for 36 hours and have not noticed a difference in cyano (1 mL of H2O2 per 10 gallons of tank water). Do I need to remove my carbon and GFO while dosing? I am still running my protein skimmer.

Don't buy the Hanna phosphate checker, buy the Hanna phosphorous checker. Much more accurate.

I would make sure nitrate is undectable , phosphate is 0.03 or less , and check PH , do regular water changes and stir the sand bed , it should not survive in a very low nutrient system

Deft will survive in nutrient low system. I had .02 pho and <2 N and still cyano took hold. Real pain

Had unmeasurable Po4 and No3, yet i got cyano so :)

I use the Hanna phosphorus checker and I never seem to get the same reading, even when doing the test a few minutes apart. I used it yesterday and got a reading of 14 ppb and retested and got 2ppb. I try to do the test perfectly making sure to get all reagent out and never even touch the vial to get prints on it.

Do you use the filter for the water to get small particles out of the water?

There are seperatetly sold filters that you can you to get particles out. These will help you get an accurate reading thats more consistant.

Oh that's lame I have to buy a separate filter to get a better reading.
