Hello
Could someone help identify what might be wrong with my chocolate tang? Just looking discolored. He seems to be eating fine.

This chocolate tang seems to have a bacterial issue which may have stemmed from ater issues/skin irritation or even a sting. Treatment will be Seachem Kanaplex, otherwise neoplex in a separate treatment tank.
Is it breathing normal or labored?

Is putting the Kanaplex in food fine as I have inverts?

No, dont recommend with foods and treat in a separate tank. Kanaplex will have effect on both coral and inverts

How long have you had this fish?
The tang is breathing a bit too fast. It is also "twitchy" in the short video - that can be a sign of flukes. Have you seen it flashing/scratching, or posing in front of any cleaner animals?

It could be flukes or a bacterial infection.

Do NOT mix Kanaplex with food unless you calculate the dose properly. Too much causes kidney failure and to little won't help. It is better to dose that in a hospital tank at the proper level in the water. The dose for food is tough to calculate - it's about 50 mg per kg of fish mass.

I have had the fish for about 2 weeks. Yes, it has been scratching on the rock.

Is it possible to treat the tank with something? I have not been able to catch him.

How big is the tank? you could try at night and put a red film over a flash light, then use a net to catch him.

Yes, if the issue is from flukes, praziquantel is a safe drug to use in your display tank. Now, I’m not 100% certain that this is flukes, but given that the fish is scratching, it does seem likely. All exposed fish would need to be treated.

Thanks. Is there any way to be certain?

If you have a microscope, you could do a skin scrape of the affected fish. However, that takes a lot of practice and a careful hand.

Thank you! Will this treatment have any effects on my inverts (snails/crabs) and coral (zoas)?

Typically, no it is a reef safe treatment. Some people report a temporary retraction in clams or corals.
