Help with reef octopus skimmer

Have a reef octopus 1000sss cone skimmer and I will get the skimmer set where I want it buy every time I add water to the sump the skimmer will start going crazy. Is this normal??

I have the same skimmer. You need to have a constant water level where the skimmer sits. Looks to me like you don't have enough water. The water level in the sump should be covering the red knob for the valve. Mine works best at that level. This skimmer is great but having the water level at the right height is very important.
 
agree, most skimmers need a constant water height! I have an octopuss skimmer and it wacko when my water level changes during water changes so I unplug it durring and plug it back in when done.
 
I dont have an octopus but I do know what when i change the water level in my sump for a water change or maintenance the skimmer does go a little crazy for up to a day, but then settles down. seems like it just tries to find its sweet spot
 
+1 on raising the water level were the skimmer sits in. run the water line inside the skimmer were the neck of the cup sits in the skimmer, dry. that skimmer has a really powerful pump!
