My 4-year-old dumped an entire thing of nyos gobi pellets into my tank. I used my sand siphon and cleaned up almost all of it. Had to use the rest of the saltwater I had. Went to pet smart since they were open. LFS I get my water from is closed. Is there anything else I can do or need to do? I'm worried about my 2 clownfish in the tank.

If you cleaned it well enough, you will probably have just a slight increase in nutrients.

I wouldn’t panic and test your nutrients after 12-24 hours to see where you at.

Thank you. Two water changes to be able to suck out fish food was not how i planned for my night to go.

If it makes you feel better - I once had a dosing pump failure which dumped 2 liters of calcium into my tank, and my dad and I ended up driving back and forth to the sea to bring 800 liters in the middle of the night.

Sometimes things like this happen, and it sucks when it happens, but it all adds up to your journey, and you’ll now have that “one time my 4 year old dumped a full container of food into my tank” story to tell others ;)

Yes i will and when he is older he will hear about it all the time. He told my wife when she asked him why he did it " i didnt see you feed them and wanted to make sure they had food." Furious about the situation but at the same time cant be to mad about it.

Hey, at least now you know he truly cares about your fish! :beaming-face-with-smiling-eyes:

Update

The fish didnt make it throught the night. Woke up to a cloudy tank and dead clownfish. Snails were barley hanging on and hermits were dead as well. Sad morning for all.

So sorry about your loss!

I would be interested in the tank parameters of it now if you could? It would help others who might end up in the same situation to know what to expect.

I am at work currently and cannot take them. I was on my out the door and wanted to check the tank before leaving. Didn't have the time. My wife had to get the fish out. I'm pretty sure there is a lot of ammonia in it.

Thats what i am wondering. You can recover, your bacteria and cycle will remain, so dont dump it and restart.

We haven't. My wife did just let me know the CUC is all alive she has them in a container with new water filter and heater. Just unsure if we should put some sand in there for them. We have some left over from setting up the tank but dont know if sand from the tank is usable.

I would just put some food in the bucket. Don’t add anything from the old tank. Test their water for ammonia and change it when it starts to raise.

Once you post tank Params we can see if some rock from the tank is safe.

Ok thank you

Yeah, heart in the right place for sure.

Really sorry to hear this, I know how frustrating and painful that must be. From what you shared, you reacted the way most of us would have, and it’s awful to see that it still wasn’t enough.

Given the bloom, it’s likely a good amount of food was still left behind, leading to a rapid oxygen drop which likely caused the losses.

You’ve already gotten solid advice here, and separating the CUC was a smart move. I’d also suggest adding aeration if you haven’t already, it’ll help both oxygenation and ammonia breakdown. Running carbon can also help pull out any excess organics.

Once you have current water parameters, we can figure out the next steps and get things moving in the right direction.

Ammonia is currently at .5 ppm and nitrite is at 0. My wife just did those two test. She is having a hard time with the lose.
