I am battling what I think is cyano and I did a big clean last night and I’m starting to see it come back a bit today and was wondering what are the downsides to chemi clean

Po4:0.08 highest it gets 0.11

Weekly water change

It’s an antibiotic so it wipes out the good and bad bacteria! I’ve also noticed a trend in Dino’s after using chemi clean on the forums lately.

Yup and that’s what I don’t want lol I would prefer cyano

I have used it several times and it worked great. Never had any problems with coral or fish. Unfortunately if the underlying issues aren't corrected it will come back within a month or so

It takes a couple of days to fully work. But if the underlying problems are not fixed, it will just come right back.

Do you have any powerheads in the tank?

Just added a second one like 3 days ago and a hang on back skimmer maybe 5 days ago. And I did a 25% water change yesterday. So maybe I should give all that some time to work it out?

What feeds cyano ? Because my phosphates are acceptable i think

I don’t think anyone truly knows lol.. most say it’s an imbalance in n03 and p04.. I typically get it in the spring and it fades away.

Sounds like you're on the right track! Flow and the skimmer will help a lot. Good luck

I've been using Chemiclean for a ~decade, but it wasn't until relatively recently with a new tank that I noticed the cycle of

Cyano > Chemiclean > Dinos > UV/Blackout > Good Tank for ~2 months > Repeat

I'm now a big believer that it does indeed wipe out the good stuff and should only be used in worst-case scenarios. I've been doing SunnyX Bacterial Coral Snow since my last outbreak and it seems to be working better overall.

I am pretty sure it eurythromycin which is gram positive could take out all beneficial bacteria. You would want to dose bacteria afterwards probably. It does work if the underlying cause is handled.

Cyano is a bacteria that can thrive on organics. Reducing organics along with higher flow and manual removal are my recommendations.
