Ok, so, how often do I need to change out my filter socks? They’re kind of expensive, and if I change them out too often won’t all the good bacteria go away...?
people usually have enough socks on hand for 2 weeks and than wash them all at the same time.
Socks are used to control organics. If they hold the organics to long they break down into phosphates and nitrates. Thus fuels algea growth. Changing often prevents this and also stops the socks from clogging and overflowing.

The beneficial bacteria is in the rocks and the socks arnt needed for this.

I use only ONE on my three filter holder sump...I use the media cups in the other two holes. All three compartments are filled with BlueLife Clear FX media and I change out the one sock weekly and agree with @sfin52 . I currently have about 6 4inch onhand and wash them weekly in the washer with a little bleach and air dry them. I rotate them...so I basically use one sock every other month.

I used to change mine weekly. And wash them all together monthly. Now I installed the KLIR a couple months back and I am never looking back. I should have purchased it day 1 :) .

I have (or had) eight filter socks, and needed to change them every 3-7 days. I'd let them collect in a closed bucket, and then clean them all at one time with a power washer. I've recently switched to a KLIR-7 roller filter and so far so good!

You can also get the mesh type, rinse inside out in your sink, and immediately replace. No need for extras on-hand

I use a plastic filter cup that sits in the sock holder which I line with cheap filter wool. The filter wool gets thrown out every 5-7 days and I put fresh in. The wastefulness of it bothers me a bit but it's very convenient...

Flip them inside out if you can, rinse off some of the collected crud.
Toss them into washer with about a capful of bleach (regular non frilly scented stuff) wash on a gentle cycle with low/no spin. If they still smell like bleach, run a rinse cycle or a 2nd time without more bleach.
Let air dry.

I eliminated filter socks many many years ago because I am just too lazy and the wife didn't want them in our washing machine. Now with the fleece roller options I went ahead on my new build and bought a Trigger system's Platinum sump with the fleece roller built in. No more changing out filter socks every few days and I can sit back for months without worrying about changing the roll and I get that clean clean

Does it have to be a sock? Or can I just use a mesh bag meant for filter media? I work at e pet store so I have those too
