Hole in torch skeleton

Hi found a small home 5mm in a new frag… Noticed a couple of hermits picking at it over the corse of a week which has made it bigger…..
Looked inside the hole and found no hitch hikers so I’ve plugged it with reef putty to stop crabs picking at it ….
Have I done wrong plugging it in tank while still submerged or should I have removed and emptied the water out of the coral then plugged it dry, so there’s no trapped water ….
Maybe a stupid question still learning….

It will probably be fine. But I eould have removed it from the tank to dry that spot to help it adhere to the surface
