How hardy are Tyree red dragon?

One of our forum members, @gig 'em , is also in my local form Austin Reef Club. I bought a humongous chunky brown frag from him at a meeting for a lot less than it was worth. It's turned out to be one of my favorites. I'm not sure that he has it any longer. Interestingly enough, he pulled entirely different colors from it than I do. I dug around and found a picture of one of the frags he had at one time:

Aggie/Htown rep! I'm interested in a frag if you have one. Pm me :)

Yep - Austin as in ATX, River City, Capital City, Silicon Hills, Bat City, People's Republic of Austin, Moscow on the Colorado, Blueberry in the Tomato Soup, home of the Dirty 6th and The Live Music Capital of the World". That Austin. :p

I have kept the same piece of this coral for about 6 years now.

RDs are an interesting coral. They are more sensitive than a typical acro but they are also grow like a weed. It is a "canary in the coal mine" coral for me. Problems will always show up on this coral first.

IME dipping in bayer is not that harsh to them and I do not agree with the low light and flow recommendations.

This coral likes medium flow and light not low. In fact when I made cuttings and put them in lower flow they would die overnight sometimes.

Here is a pic of the one in my last tank it was aprox 20" across when I removed it. I still have a frag of it in my new tank. If you look close you can see it is rite in front of a MP40 less than 10" away and the coral is growing towards it.

That is amazing.

I do still have this coral around. And I’ve finally figured out lower PAR brings out the bright green and purple, otherwise it’s white and purple with purple polyps at higher PAR. I travel through Houston for work if you’re ever interested!

I’d probably cringe to hear what you’d call Htown :)
Murder Capital, STDtown, potholes city?? Lol

Older thread but relevant because it’s about the red dragon

They are definitely very very sensitive

I have 3 frags from one in an accident and the biggest is RTN’ing due to a small alk spike and possibly some phosphate dropping rapidly

Thankfully the other 2 frags are fine

I tried to save it by fragging off the healthy sections which absolutely works on acros but checking tonight it’s still RTNing

Red Dragon was tough. Most people who took frags from mine lost them. My colony would grow fine for months then, for no discernible reason, half the colony would RTN. As soon as I saw it start, I'd clip the healthy branches, re-glue, and it would grow back out again. I had this pattern for years.

I saved a "red ferrari" from WWC in this manner, but one of my Red Dragons didn't make it even after reglueing - it was completely RTN'd this morning.

The other 2 frags of the same coral in the DT right next to it are fine though.

I usually don't bother with any kind of iodine and just clip it - but this time I dipped the cutters in an iodine dip first - what about you?
