How long too keep

Well I have 40 gal. with 3 colonies in it. I have TO 4 lights on the tank. I have keep algae out of the tank. So how long due I keep the lights on thanks Ed

I keep my lights on 8 hours and I feel this helps to keep algae out of my tank...along with request 25-33% water changes and the correct clean up crew.
