How many is to many corals....

......to add the first time? I've been checking parameters at home and with my LFS, so far we've been very very close. I added 2 Onyx Percs, a Fire/Blood Shrimp and few more cleaners last week. Tanks going on 2 weeks, cycled with LR/LS so far so good, no serious issues or threats. Wondering how many I can throw in at once. Looking at WWC for my purchase, also please offer up other online reputable dealers.

idk this is what i got in my 10g

fist size = large colony

2 large colony paly, 1 mixed with parazoanthus

large colony kenya tree

large colony of rics, like 3 heads but they are massive

2 massive gorgs

massive colony of 1.5" giant barnacles (7 heads) 1 solitary one

3" solitary tunicate

large colony of montipora

frag rack with pavona and acro

large colony of leptstrosis

tons of other sponges and tunicates,

large peice of codium

large ball of some pink macro

scattered sargassum

large rhodactis mushroom (1 head)

my tank is a total mess but it works out. i have a hawkfish and a blenny in there. hopefully no new stuff until july idek if this is all of it. i got 10 lbs of rock in there too

I prefer fewer corals in my display in lieu of having them grow large. I don't think there is an answer if you have flow and enough light.

I can get the paras when I get home. I use Red Sea Marine and they use Hanna and Salifert, I also have a Salifert PO4. It's two weeks, I went with LR/LS (TBS) added a CUC a couple days in, then fish, shrimp and more CUCs last Friday. I'm going to check paras again tonight. The water is crystal clear, I change the filter floss weekly, filter media is carbon & nano rings that came with the set up.

Tank goals are all softies for a beginner, Rics, Ken tree, Pulsing Xen, Zoas & CLove Polyps and perhaps a few others as I go. I have a nice cave like aquascape, offering plenty of shelves and separation, also planning on a couple frag shelves.

Assuming that this is your first reef. I suggest that you take it slowly so that you have a chance to learn how to take care of them and what your actual preferences are. Some of the species you listed quickly grow to plague proportions. My suggestion: get yourself some of the brightest clove polyps you can find, a couple of nice Florida Ricordea and perhaps a zoa strain or two...but go for colorful ones that you will like long term. Add those over the course of a few weeks.

Depending on the parameters when you post them I would stick with only a few to start. You can always go back and get more after your initial purchase but if you buy a bunch then have issues your wasting money. You should be fine with any of the ones you listed if your parameters are good to go.

It's a whole separate forum for new england reefers. Google"Boston Reefers Society" and you will find us! We also have in person events.

You can buy WWC corals from local reefers who have them growing in their tanks. It will cost a tiny fraction of the wwc price and you will meet local club members.

As for keeping xenia on an island... Good luck! I understand why people like it, but I have just seen it get out of control so fast. My policy is to only add corals that have a place in my "dream tank". Corals all grow. You can start with a tiny frag of something fancy and before you know it you will have a nice colony of something fancy. If you start with a frag of something you don't really love...well it will grow into a colony that you also do not love.

An island won't contain a Kenya Tree. As they grow they release branches to find a new spot to attach starting a new coral. It's super easy to pick the new ones out so they don't take over the tank, but I thought you should know in advance. Some mushrooms will do something similar where the new ones find a different spot to chill. The island idea works pretty good with zoas, gsp, xenia, and probably cloves.

I don't think it matters all that much to be honest, but for a first tank you'll want to start slower. My own reef is only half stock at the 2 year mark, meanwhile my third tank was half stocked after 4 days and everything is going just fine. Start with something hardy and resilient (shrooms and zoas are a good choice) but make sure to leave room up top for SPS if you ever want to try!
Also, unpopular opinion, but I wouldn't recommend WWC. They may do a good job, sure, but I will never be able to justify paying $300 for a tiny nub of acropora, or a single zoanthid polyp. Really disgraceful what they've done to prices in the hobby, as they've pretty much been the spearhead regarding the name game and stupid crazes, at least this time around. I implore you to try and find local reefers who you can share a trade coral with! I only recently joined my local club, but I don't know how I lived without it for so long!
