Is there a way to tell how many pictures a camera has taken? I just found a canon s5 is on craigslist for 240.. Is that a good price? How many pics are they good for?

It depends on how big of a memory card you have and also what your settings are for the pictures ie high resolution, low etc.

There is a way to tell how many times the shutter has been activated, but it's usually not something you can discover from the in-camera menu, i.e., it takes an authorized repair person/Canon and/or software not available to the general public. You're smart to ask that question, but my guess is that most cameras, through normal use, are nowhere near the design limit for the shutter mechanism.

Agreed, good question, there are some tools for Canon's higher end DSLR, but I have not seen one for point and shoots.

Is this a good price for the S5? Would you guys (canon users) get it? If so what are some good macro lenses?

I don't know what a good price is for an S5. I'll leave it to you to do the research. If you want to have a macro lens, you're going to be better off with a DSLR. I don't think an S5 accepts interchangeable lenses.

I had a S1 and I could add an adapter tube, so im assuming the s5 would be the same way.. I totally agree with you about getting a dslr but unless someone is giving them away for 250ish theres no way I will ever be able to afford 1..

There are no real lenses for the S5, other then what it comes with. The screw on things are called "diopters" and usually they do more harm then good.
