I dont get it with all for reef.

For those thinking you cannot raise alk w/AFR:

150G total water volume, daily dose 24 hours seperated by the hour which is 3.1ml a hour.

My calcium stays stable 420-450 iv seen it hit the highest. Same for calcium 1370-1380.

Also. Don’t dose it evenly throughout 24 hours. Just dose it evenly over first 5 hours of morning or so. It takes a while for the donate to break down into usable alk. Unlike every other alk mix it doesn’t mix immediately. Could be skewing results

It isn't that you can't but rather is it the right product to use. Even Tropic Marin recommends getting the values to desired levels before using or using ones favorite 2 part or similar product to manually correct. It is due to the latency from increasing the AFR dose and when the Alkalinity may show up in a test result.

Unrelated to your reply but another member raised the point about seeing all of the daily 'how to use' or 'how to dose' or 'I am frustrated with' AFR posts. A lot is a simple misunderstanding or lack of reading. Again, not directed at you or anyone in general.

Yes, you can raise alkalinity by increasing the dose. Is there a better way? Yes, there is.

To each their own, I just don't see any reason not to increase alk with AFR except cost, and I just don't feel like its that big of a deal.

I'm already backing off the dosage and its only been a few days. Just need to find the right number now to keep it around 8.5.

There are just as many or more “how much 2 part” threads as AFR threads

People want clear and concise instructions but as we all know, it’s not that simple

In my opinion it isn't even about cost. 1600 g container is 75 USD pre shipping and tax and makes 10 liters.

As I mentioned earlier it is the latency between the AFR increase dose vs the amount of time it takes to show up as an alkalinity increase. I know all of our systems are different but in my case it can take up to 36 hours. So for me it is easier to use my left over ESV alkalinity to manually correct.

I should note that I am not arguing with you at all. You are correct in that we do things differently and neither way is wrong. I was just trying to point out the why and probably failed.

I use 2 part on dosers, a water change once in a while and trace elements. I'm sure there is a better way. I'll order some AFR and supplement what I already do as it seams a lot of reefers like what it does for them. All good info.

It took me a few weeks to get my 2 part dosage correct. I may be the only one who still uses a Litermeter and slave pumps, and they don't play well with doses less than 50-100ml a day so I mix my 2 part at 1/2 strength so I can double the amount and dose it accurately. I don't use an Apex (yet) and I only measure the alk once a week perhaps and it is rock steady at 8 most of the time. As long as I see the level of the 2 part containers going down I know the alk is likely in the desired range. However like most of you, my tank's alk consumption goes up as things grow so I have to adjust the dose now and then. FWIW on my 80g SPS dominant frag system I dose the equivalent of 90ml a day of each 2 part. I'm probably overdue for a review of what I do and try out some new methods. :smiling-face-with-sunglasses:

All For Reef (AFR) is not used in conjunction with traditional 2 part.

Why not? There is nothing wrong with using different alk/ca supplements in conjunction with each other.

I never used All For Reef, but this product is superior for new reefers (seasoned reefers can use it, too.)

I like it for beginners because they don’t have to juggle alkalinity, calcium, and magnesium dosing. There are many threads of people trying to dose those independently to maintain all three. With the test kits we have, they end up chasing their tails.

Go back to page one and watch the video linked. Lou/Tropic Marin will describe why.

I don't see why not, AFR is just 3 part and some traces. Of course Tropic Marin wants you to use it as a stand alone product, you'll use more of it. ;)

If that was the case then they wouldn't offer the other products. The reason is there are better, and cheaper, options if one wants to add trace elements with 2 part.

I don't understand this comment especially since you haven't used it.

There are plenty of experienced reefers using AFR none of which is because it is a superior product. @Troylee for example.

Let’s not forget @SunnyX runs it also! His tank speaks volumes… newbs I tell ya! ;)

It’s actually formulated to replenish traces in certain ratios and amounts. Adding alkalinity and calcium from other sources skews these ratios.

We’ve seem multiple ICP tests from long time AFR users that show Tropic Marin has done a great job with estimating those ratios.

Huh? I said I believed it’s superior because it’s a 3 in one solution that generally maintains alk, calcium, and magnesium. This is especially useful for beginner reefers, but anyone can use this product.

I don’t understand your response to me.

Maybe you should try it! It’s so simple and it works! Ask Sunny x he’s a newb haha! A single dosing head and it’s set and forget once you have your dose! It doesn’t get any easier…
