So wierd, I never liked chalice's thought they were just boring, and over priced. Now like a snap of a finger I cant get enough, Ive been buying them like crazy. The one question I have is where are you people putting them? In the display tank ? or in your frag tank? I see people putting them in seperate frag tanks, Do people feed them? do they haveto be feed? what are the standards.

Oh boy, are you in trouble  I tried to get away from the chalice hunt and concentrate on sps but of course they just pulled me back in. I am definitely hooked. They are going to have to set-up a hotline for us addicts. Good luck!

I feed mine mysis and TropicMarin LPS pellets. The don't need to be target fed, but they will puff up more and grow faster with feeding.

I'm the same way man, I could never get into the chalice thing, and still haven't. But...I did have two of them not that long ago and were really nice. I just can't justify the prices on some of them, regardless on how gorgeous they are.

Lets see some pics of yours :)

fellow addict here. same situation. I couldn't justify the prices until i got my first piece. bright bright red with yellow/green eyes. kinda like a ultra scoly in the eye. after taking care of that fatso i got hooked, then I got another piece, then another......you know the story. then I finally plunked $$ down for about 14 frags, all chalices. now i'm seeing them color up and growing i'm enjoying them. *BIT BY BUG* . I think i like em because they do grow slow, don't have to worry about cutting them back all the time and i enjoy seeing all the different (or hope for more colors) morphs/colors that come out.

Yep started with highend zoas and got into sps. I always thought chalices were boring and it really didn't fancy me, until I started going over to my buddy's house who has a nice collection. Started of with an Alien Eye, picked up a frag of Bazooka Joe, and next thing I know spending $200 on a frag. I ended up going over to a reefer getting out of the hobby last October and bought every chalice colony and highend sps colony he owned. Now I don't have anymore room on the sandbed and I still can't get enough. Went to our local club meeting last night and Steve Tyree was there. The piece that I really wanted was Your Reefs Hypnosis that went for $160, but I had already spent $150 earlier picking up a ATL Pink Lemonade colony. Fuzzy sticks and the fancy saucers are like crack and I keep telling myself that I'll make room somewhere..lol The only thing I haven't yet done was spend more than $200 for a single eyed chalice. Probably would if my wife wouldn't divorce me:)

Its worse than drugs I think, well Not sure because I never used drugs but Im friggin addicted. My wife supports me to a degree, but this board doesnt help. Every time I go on here and see a chakice pack or frag for sale Im in there shooting Pm's back and forth. I have a pretty unique collection of acans and maybe 6 chalices that I will be moving from my sand bed in my diplay to my frag tank downstairs to feed and monitior there health better. The problem with these small pieces in my display they get knocked over from the snails and are very hard to spot feed because of the snails, shrimps, crabs. I will start feeding them 3 times a week too get the growth action started. Ive had a pink ****** chalice in my display for a year now and its only grew about 3/4 of an inch, I dont spot feed it because of its location but he going downstairs too. I gotta start fraging stuff so I can buy more. This is far worse than my low 8 sec race car addiction.

chalices

Yeah they are addicting, hard to kill, keep their color, forgiving tank requirements. prices are coming way down too. for all the addicts... many of the vendors on here sell on ebay as well. some super good deals, a lot of times selling well below $10 for big frags! i ebay search "live coral chalice"

never cared for them till I ran out of room for acros mostly because I was never successful at making them thrive in a clean tank but thats untill my crocea clam died and all my chalice corals came alive exploding with color. Now its all i look at! they look like candy to me, just wanna pop one in my mouth

btw, to answer your question I keep my chalices on the sandbed in a sps dominated tank under halides and 4 t5 acitincs but placed closer to the acitincs. I upgraded to a bigger skimmer so I can feed heavy(fish food) and export heavy and with weekly water changes. I also run a fuge and i can see hundreds if not thousand of tiny microscopic pods swimming in them which I'm guessing is food for them. I always see all of them puffed up with their mouths open during the day

Sorry to hear you caught the bug. Most of mine sit on the sandbed...once they get a little bigger i try to place on the rock. Feeding is just a good way to help them grow faster...i feed brine, mysis, pellets, flakes, just about anything...chalices are pigs!

AT first I didn't like chalices either, but then I got a few Tyree ones for cheap and have been hunting down the prettiest and least common ones.

I keep mine on the substrate and glued to a few select rocks. Gooch makes chalice domes that look really nice.

I try to feed mine but I am still having issues with that.

I thought the same thing when I first started looking at corals. Now I think they are pretty sweet. I do think they are a challenge to aquascape with and make it look natural. I started a Chalice Aquascape thread that I am hoping some chalice aquascaping masters show off in!

Great addiction to have Bill  I too thought like you at one point I would ask myself what's all the fuss about but the one that did it too me was when I saw Steve's aka Pnoy's "Convict". Truely a Diamond in his 180 and after that all I remember was saying give me a frag of each chalice you have in the tank :xd::bigsmile: lol. Boy am I glad to be in the Roc Citi Growout because a lot of the pieces I lost due to crash :sad:I have now reaquired and then some :smile:
