Next project on the list was to get a QT put together. I had two 50 gallon breeders that each had one cracked panel, so I decided to make one out of the two. Not many pictures of this. My middle son was helping and between working/watching him help me cut apart glass tanks and just getting sucked into the project I didn’t snap many pics.

Here are a couple I did take.

This tank had a cracked bottom panel. Here is the tank with that panel removed.

Harvested the bottom panel from a tank with a cracked back panel. Cleaned all the old silicone up, and put it all back together.

Will let everything cure a few days and then will water test it. Need to cleanup some of the silicone seams as well.

Other than that, drained bleach water round one from the rock tubs and started a second round. Oh, and did a rough sketch of the fishroom layout. My thought right now is to build a shelf 18-24” wide that will be tied into the wall studs on the back side and have legs coming down on the front side. This would give me flexibility in placement of QT’s future frag tanks, and hopefully an area for fragging/testing.

Here is a pic of a rough sketch. Would love some input on this.

Well I had planned to make some progress on the fishroom yesterday, but instead I ended up going to a buddy’s house to gather some equipment, and then a trip to Lowe’s for a few more supplies. My buddies place is over an hour away, and by the time I got done with all my running I didn’t get anything done on the project.

I did score a new 29 that will eventually become my coral QT as well as some pumps/lights/filtration for The QT. Some of that stuff went from me to him when I shut down two years ago. A big thanks to @dcmartinpc for taking care of it for me.:) It was great to see you and catch up a bit Don.

Plan for today after church is to get lights hung in the fishroom, get a second coat of mud on the walls, and drain the second round of bleach water off the rocks and to start them rinsing in a dechlorinator. Maybe water test the QT as well.

Hopefully will have pics and progress to report later.

Very nice! How difficult was swapping the panels? Ive got a 75 that i need to reseal, and i might replace the back panel on it.

Honestly the two hardest parts about swapping panels are getting the plastic trim off the tanks and getting all of the old silicone cleaned up. Take your time cutting everything apart and cleaning it up and you can handle it.

This type of knife works really well at cutting through the silicone seams when disassembling tanks.

Welcome back to hobbie!
Very nice project! Following

Thanks. Welcome aboard.

I would do a standard 120g for your sump. Great build so far!

I actually found a 125 today that I was able to pick up cheap, and it will be my sump. This caused me to not get as much done here as I was hoping, but it does put one more piece of the puzzle in place. Thanks for the advice though.

I didn't get as much done today as I had wanted to, but I did get a little done. The first of 2 circuits was run to the fish room, and wired in so that I could get a light fixture mounted in the fish room and move the other light fixture that was tied in with all the other basement lights to outside of the fish room.

I also got the QT tank water tested and cleaned up.

Sorry for the late updates everyone, but I have a little time here at lunch so I figured I would post some pics of some of the goodies squired over the weekend.

first of all, the stack of stuff I came home with on Saturday after my trip to visit @dcmartinpc.

There is a brand new 29 gallon that will become a coral/invert QT, some misc. pumps to use while cycling rock, part of my life reef skimmer (will have to get back to get the rest of it) a HOB skimmer and lighting for over QT tanks. I think there are a few more pieces there, but that is the just of it. Thanks again Don.

Next was the 125 I found for a sump.

It is exactly what I wanted size wise, but unfortunately it is a reef ready tank. Price was right so I decided I would just cut the overflows out of it.

Spent some time last night getting the overflow boxes removed. I am still trying to decide if I want to cut some glass and patch the holes, or if I want to put bulkheads in the holes to use for drains/returns for water changes. Would love everyone’s thoughts.

Finally, I ordered the 20” EMS overflow this weekend as well. That’s all for now. Hopefully I will be able to get the second coat of mud on the fishroom tonight.

Been a busy couple of days with school programs for the kids, work, etc. so not much has gotten done on this project. Did get a box with some test kits and a pump for the cpr bakpak skimmer that will go on the QT in yesterday.

Hope to get some progress made this weekend. Will have more to post later.

You know you’re a reefer when it is 35 degrees outside and this is your choice of activity.

Cleaned out the 125 that will become the sump. Will let it dry out well and then begin planning baffles, etc. It was definitely a little chilly with a garden hose and scrubber pads/razor blades, but it needed to be done.

Also got the fishroom painted yesterday.

Plan for today is a trip to Lowe’s for some lumber and screws and get the shelf built that will hold QT’s. Also will start plumbing the drain line over to the fishroom. Have to replace a sump pump and run some PVC.

RO system is due in Wed or Thur so hopefully I can start cycling rocks at that point.
