Industrial ro/di water

So I am getting a cyano outbreak. I am assuming from using tap water cause its def not from low water flow considering where its growing the water flow was so high it would actually move the sand. Plus on one of the corals there is a ton of flow (the polyps are blowing every which way) and its growing there. seems to only grow in high flow areas.

Anywho I am not using ro/di because I cant afford to replace the catridges n stuff on the free ro/di unit I got from a fellow reefer. I do work for a company that has an industrial ro/di unit that filters the water down to .3 microsemens and has .001 ppb when it comes to "bacteria". TDS is obviously 0. Its so clean we have to use 316ss for the piping because thats the only material the water cant leech minerals etc from. The thing im afraid of is that its too pure and will actually make things worse in my tank. Maybe even kill things because its so pure???


what do you guys think?

Use it! Probably the best water money can buy. Of course you will be getting it free. Since your employer wont pay you a decent wage to afford replacement cartridges, consider it a well deserved perk. Once you add salt any worry's about it being "too pure" will be negated.

I agree. Everything you will need in your water is in the salt mix. Go for it!

Make it 3, I would use that water if I could.

All that stuff about water being "too pure" is propaganda to get you to buy something.

I agree with everyone else. I dont think that water can be too clean for a reef.

I keep my resin changed in my RO/DI system so that it stays at zero. Then again a friend of mine has a very nice and successful SPS reef and it claims that his success is do to the high TDS of his tap water which is about 410 TDS. I will stick with the RO/DI water myself.....

With that being said, I have seen great success from pure water to what is considered to be dirty water.

lol@salty. I almost grabbed a bucket this weekend but didnt. I may work this upcoming weekend and if I do ill prob grab the water from the Hot RO/DI side (80C water) as its easier than grabbing it from the cold RO/DI (which feeds the Hot) side. Mostly because the cold water has to be 99.9% sealed. There are 2 outlets I have access to but they are 1/16 valves so the opening is only that big. Would take a LONG time to fill a 5g bucket from that lol.

316 stainless will oxidize and will release Iron, molybdenum,and chromium into the water. Granted the process is slow but it happens. The process will be accelerated if the Deionizing chamber is exhaused ( cation or anion resin).

That being said the water is an outstanding choice for reef. The small traces will be so minute that there should be no concern even in the long run.

ill check to make sure im not wrong about the 316 but I dont remember ever seeing our pipes get oxidized.

There are some specific salts that you may want to consider using with that super stripped RO/DI water. They have the beneficial minerals that the RO/DI process removes in higher quantities than stuff like Instant Ocean and Reef Crystals. I just can't remember the name of it right now :smile:

Red Sea Coral Pro is what I think it is. A friend of mine uses it and was recomended to him for just these reasons. Could be complete BS, but make sense.
