Instant ocean

This is the salt I was set up with at my LFS. I was not aware that there were different salts for reef tanks. I purchased an "Instant Ocean reef salt" line and now I am not sure if, on my next water change, I convert instantly or slowly combined the two salts.
I also looked into "red sea salt" and it looks amazing – and expensive – but it only seemed to have info about reefs on the bag, not so much fish?

Salt is a debated subject. I firmly believe each to their own on this. However, if you are raising corals, you do need to at least switch to the reef salt. The rest of the debate, I refuse to get into. IO is great for fish only as it is cheap and good. However, at least go to a reef crystals or reef salt to raise corals.

I have been using IO reef crystals for a very long time and have not had problems, I think for the most part any major brand of salt is good.

I have used a few salts (high cost ones) and found that for me, IO Reef Crystals is great. Forgot to mention what I use. Sorry.

I used reef crystals for a year and then started dosing my tank with alk mag and cl. Now that I dose these I just use the regular instant Ocean. Never had a problem with either one of them.

Good old regular IO is, IMHO, just fine for reef tanks. I've been using it for many years with no issue. Many TOTMs have also used it with spectacular results. Even our resident chemistry expert - Randy Holmes-Farley - only uses IO.

But, as others have said, there is nothing wrong with using Reef Crystals or most any of the other more expensive salts.
