My name is Henry Leung. I am the Managing Partner of an aquatic research organization and licensed veterinary hospital based in Shenzhen, China.

Recently, we began investigating AquaForest Bio S as consumers reported zero tangible effects on new-tank cycling. Here are the facts so far:

The Discovery

Our laboratory ran a 16S high-throughput sequencing protocol on a retail bottle of Bio S. The required gel electrophoresis produced no bands. It showed zero detectable bacterial DNA.

See Column 3 for AF Bio S.

Separately, an independent third party tested the same product. Their 16S sequencing found that autotrophic nitrifying bacteria accounted for less than 1% of the sample. Furthermore, sequencing detects DNA; it does not guarantee viability. That <1% could easily be dead.

See Community Barplot Analysis.

Most alarmingly, according to this recent third report, about 50% of microbial life in AF Bio S appears to be Microcystis, a form of cyanobacteria.

The Dubious Reply and the Silence

We contacted AquaForest. We shared our findings. Their laboratory's response was deeply unscientific. Among other excuses, they claimed the chemical composition of Bio S might "inhibit" standard testing.

In short: they claim their product is untestable by standard science.

Six days ago, we firmly requested they treat us as a standard customer and supply a verifiable, arm's-length sample to rule out forgery or improper storage. We stated we would run our own tests and publish the final conclusion.

They have gone completely silent.

The Reality for Your Aquarium
What does this mean for the average reefer? It means that even if the product is genuine, the data suggests dosing it will do nothing. You cannot cycle a tank or bring actual, biological change to your aquarium with less than 1% of potentially dead bacteria.

Our Next Steps and EU Law
AquaForest operates in Poland, placing them under the jurisdiction of the European Union. The EU enforces strict consumer protection laws, specifically the Unfair Commercial Practices Directive.

Under this law, a consumer does not have to prove a marketing claim is false. Instead, the law shifts the burden of proof to the producer. National authorities can force the manufacturer to furnish actual evidence that their factual claims are true. If a company claims a product is "highly concentrated," the law demands they prove it.

The first step in this EU process is a formal complaint to the Polish Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (UOKiK). We have started this process. We will exhaust all regulatory and scientific channels to get to the bottom of this. We will publicize every subsequent step and every piece of correspondence here.

Science and transparency matter. For too long, consumers in this hobby have bought magic in a bottle blindly. We spend millions on blind faith. That stops now.

We will update this thread as soon as we make our next move.

But the sales blurb sais "Contains specially selected bacterial strains.", lol. I wouldnt try another cycle with bacterial products, they seem no better than cycles started with flake food in general. There are one or two exceptions though.

What's left unsaid is more important. Specially selected -- sure. But any tangible, measurable effects?
