Is my cycle borked?

I'm boring. Probably a couple clowns. My lfs said not to get clowns because they'll claim ownership of the whole tank. But most of the other things im looking at want a more established tank.

How big is your tank, and what else were you hoping for?

I struggled with my ammonia for two weeks... couldn't get the tank to fight it off

It's a 48 gallon cubish tank with a 25g sump.
I want a radiant Wrasse, and maybe a leopard. A goby shrimp combo, white cap preferably. A flame hawk. Dwarf angel. Lol

Lol! Yes we all want more fish than we probably should have

Start slowly with the hardier and more peaceful fish. It is true that Clownfish can be very, very aggressive both with each other and other fish. They can indeed stake their claim over a whole tank, and vigorously defend it against any new fish you try to add, which are completely at a disadvantage because they are stressed and have no idea where to hide yet. Adding the Clowns after other fish is a great idea, even if the Clowns are hardier and would ideally make the best first residents.

When my tank was cycling I believe my nitrate read 80ppm when nitrite was around 2ppm.
Then I learned nitrate will read wrong in the presence of nitrite.
Save yourself money and stop testing nitrate until your nitrite bottoms out.

I don't know what is going on. I started cycling last Wednesday. Yesterday, I added ammonium chloride to get it back up to 1.5 because it had fallen to .25. Today i tested it and it's back down to .25. But it's only been 6 days. And my nitrates maxed out my hanna at a blinking 75

That probably made no sense.

Seems reasonable to me if you have plenty of ammonia reducing capacity and not full nitrite reducing capacity. The nitrate is clearly a false reading due to nitrite.

I think I’d call it cycled and move on to adding your first creatures.

I know the origin, i just use it in that context. Always have.

The NO3 is very likely a false reading due to elevated NO2. There's really no need to test NO3 until you see ammonia and NO2 spike and then drop to 0. Test again in a week.

I actually ran into a similar situation. It honestly depends on the quality of live rock and live sand. My LFS actually has live rock running in their tanks that they sell in tank water cycling so when starting my cycle my ammonia dropped real quick. I mostly relied on API test kits that are bad but you can have a fast cycle if the Ammonia drops real quick and I imagine if Ammonia goes from 2 to 0.5 or 0.25 its likely a miss reading since its not like they just disappear.
