Hi all,

My toadstool leather has gone from open and growing to the second image below. It’s been this way for around 7days. Is this on its way out??? It’s been bigger than the open pic but not images of it.

I moved it to sandbed a while back and it’s had been open and growing in the spot it is now until around a week maybe more ago.

Any advice greatly appreciated!

Chris.

toadstool and other leathers will often close up for a few days up to a week or more, they are moody, sometimes they need to shed. Ensure it has enough flow to help it shed. Sometimes I take a turkey baster and gently blow on it, that sometimes perks it up.

Mine do this all the time. Sometimes because I put aminos in the water and sometimes because the universe aligns just right. They decay pretty quickly if not doing well. The integrity in this one looks great. It may just be getting ready to shed. I find that mine love medium or high flow and stay open most of the time in those conditions, when in lower flow they tend to close up more frequently.

Thanks all! It’s middle tank in between the Orbit 4 one end and 2 Neros the other bit might move it closer to one of the Nero’s to up the flow a bit!

Fingers crossed it comes alive again!

Elevate this guy and place in a path of water flow as they do best in moderate light and medium flow. Once you elevate it, give it a few gentle bursts with a turkey baster and you will likely see sediment, even a film come off of it.

I have seen some film floating in the tank the last couple of days but couldn't work out what it was! I have it on the sandbed in the direct path of one of the Nero powerheads? should that be enough?

I would elevate it. That flow towards the sandbed is directing sediment and detritus onto the leather which it will cling to. Often at the sandbed, there is more subtle flow- Mid tank will offer higher and free flow

One of Mine ay mid tank:

Okay have moved to here for now. Do I need to be aware of the blasto touching at any point?

My blastos don’t seem to bother anything. My concern would be the leather releasing tanins into the water if too close but they seem fine distance wise in the picture.

that's great. The leather is on a nice bit of rock so can move around if anyone gets a bit close at any point.

Update:

Seems to have taken a bit of a dive to the right overnight…

It's shedding. They get a really shiny film right before they start shedding. Once they start it looks aweful. Maintain moderate to a moderate high and will look great in a couple of days.

It's really stressful on new leather owners when they first experience this.
