I’ve had my tank up and running since may ish- this purple algae has been growing the last couple months, and I like it but wondering if it’s a bad sign of anything? I will do a water check later tonight after a 16 hour shift

Looks like cyanobacteria to me. What are the water parameters? Salinity, nitrates, phosphates, Alk etc. How's the flow?

At work atm. My girlfriend asked if it was okay, and truthfully I didn’t know so i told her I will ask someone. She doesn’t feel comfortable doing a water test so I’ll be checking tonight after like 10:30 when I get off of work. Will update soon.

Edit to add- I have a fulval 307 I believe, so I think it’s decent? Moves the top water really well, and can tell by the algae moving and swaying along the sandbed

Is that the only water flow? Typically cyano is from nutrient sinks or areas of low flow.

This would be the only flow, yes. I did not know I would be in need of more flow than what I had. Didn’t ever want the water to be to heavy of a flow, figured that would harm the fish more than help

Unless the sand is being blown around the tank its not too much flow for the fish. I would try to increase the flow along the sandbed - tomorrow lol. Its just cyano, not a big deal really, its nothing that requires your attention after a 16 hour shift. Keep up with regular water changes, cyano often appears when there are higher level of organics in the water. If you have trouble getting rid of it naturally, then use chemiclean, cyano is a bacteria not an algae and chemiclean is another bacteria that counters the cyano. But you have to solve the underlying issue's before using chemiclean or the cyano will just come right back. Good luck
