How badly do you want it? can you find it somewhere else cheaper? asking other people if its an 800$ coral is a waste of time. Coral isn't like a commodity with a set price. Do you want it $800 worth? If someone else buys it for $800 will you be disappointed that you didn't buy it or relieved that the seller found some other sucker? I wouldn't buy it based on the idea that you can sell frags for 800, that rarely works out, but if you just have to have it and you can't find it some where else cheaper why not, most of us have spent more on sillier things at some point in our lives.

Also can you you get some better pics, lol

Acanthophylia was my most expensive coral. I watched one in the lfs for a year and I think they were asking $900 I got it for $490 cash OTD. It did great for a couple of years and the skeleton is over the hill with the rest of my failure :rolling-on-the-floor-laughing:
Sorry to hear that. Tough to spend that kind of money on a coral and not have it survive longterm.

I've had 2 or 3 of my Acanthos for about 8 years or so, and the rest for at least a couple of years. But I built my system around those fleshy LPS corals. Lower light, lower flow, lower temp, and lots of food and filtration. I've always felt you have to choose either a high energy system for SPS or a low energy system for LPS. Tough to have both in the same tank and have them do well.

I’ve spent $$$ on acro sticks, and I believe most of us have, as well as regret having done so. I see something new and shiny, got to have it. Of course, with experience and knowing the right vendors, we can get excellent looking and healthy acro for great value. We also know from experience when pics look too good to be true; but we’re always asking is that just another version of what I already have. It’s a shame that beginners have to wade through the proverbial mine field though, but like most things in life, it’s new and exciting territory, like Risky Business. On the other hand, in my honest opinion, if someone puts up a picture of a ordinary or extraordinary acro frag for $800 and is able to sell it, then good for him or her

oh and i forgot to answer the actual question. what's makes a frag cost 800.00? its greed. Nothing more.

yours in particular looks like a fairly common sarmentosa, so even with an irresistible name and pic, maybe 89.00 tops? for aquaculture maybe?

Great deal on a 3/4” frag plug! I should be totally honest though, it’s a 2cm frag plug

It's worth what someone will pay is the most pragmatic answer I can give.
Is a single strat polyp worth £200?
I'd say God no but a chap on Instagram is selling them for thar here in UK

People are buying them too!
All in the eye of the beholder

Yeah I’ve sprung for up to $300 on a stick, bc I just had to have it and it was right in front of me. I also could see the mother colony (which I liked) and the frag was a healthy chunk. On the other hand I’m now looking for nice corals with better value.
I guess one part of sticks is as soon as someone else gets it who can actually grow it and propagate it the value will go down. So if you are the exclusive supplier the value will be higher, but only for a matter of time. Of course this exclusivity and high price will remain the nicer/harder to grow the piece is. So once this coral gets sold 20 times in a year when some of those people who purchased it are fragging it and selling it at shows what will it be worth? They’re trying to get what they can. And if you paid it, it’s worth it.
I personally don’t think that’s more than a $100 value. I only see two colors and nothing earth shattering that I can tell from the pic. Pic also seems doctored.
On another note only the craziest reefers are into sticks, so the market size is relatively small compared to other corals. My LFS says he’s only got about 5 people willing to pay more than $30 a frag for Acropora. One of those 5 people just came back from a coral expo with this one. Also how does he know for sure it’s this one?!? He probably doesn’t. I’m not sure what he paid for it.
