Hi, can someone tell me if this coral in the pic is dead? I cut the heads because they closed and never opened again and it was dying and I read somewhere online that if you cut the dead head it might survive, it still looks green and it doesn’t smell yet, I use to have it close to the surface also under a light that had the white leds at 100% so it started bleaching so now I turned down the whites to 15% on my light and my blues are at 100% I have a USA orbit aquarium light from amazon that it’s suppose to be ok for coral, I’d hate to loose this coral since it’s the first one I have bought, I have a lot to learn in this hobby any help would be appreciated.

I'm afraid to say it, but it does look dead. Do you see any polyps inside the skeleton, its hard to see in the picture. If no polyps are visible then yes. Sorry for your loss.

Here is a picture from the top, I can’t tell if it has any polyps I don’t think it does but it doesn’t smell which is why I keep thinking it’s still alive

Not sure if I understood you correctly but did you cut off all 3 heads ? Judging from the pic it’s looks to dead

Its hard to say, because when ever I seen one dead, mine included, you can usually seen inside the skeleton, that kinda looks like their might be some flesh inside, but I will have to lean toward deceased. Sorry, they r beautiful.

Yeah I cut off all 3 heads they were all dead I don’t know why it happened, could it have been the bleaching? I have a ricordea mushroom, a gsp and a hammer coral and they all seem to be doing ok

The reason is because I’m new to the coral hobby lol and well I didn’t know what to do I was going to throw it away but I read somewhere online that if it’s not brown and doesnt smell than Mayb it’s not dead and to just cut off the heads as long as you cut just below the head, I threw it away now I’m going to get another one because I love the way they look

Let’s see if we can get you in the right track to keep them alive , would you mind posting some info about your tank , how old is it ? what type of filtration do you have? Water parameters? This will help us help you. I would probably try a couple softies first maybe a Shroom to make sure you can keep thing alive and stable before adding LPS. Best of luck.

Dead yes, but to confirm, decrease white lighting and increase blue and moderate water movement and see if any change

Yeh don't do that lol. If u cut them just below the head when they were alive then thats like fragging them and should heal but if they had a brown jelly disease then nothing u can really do. If only one head had the brown jelly, what u can do is cut that 1 head off so it doesn't spread to the others.

It’s confirmed, I had my white light to 15 percent and I placed the frag at the bottom of my tank where there ok water movement and it was there for about a week and a half and never changed so it’s gone now

Ok my tank is about 3 months old, I made a sump for it with a protein slimmer and trying to build a refugium as well on it but having a hard time keeping my copepods there and they all eventually end up in my tank, my water parameters well my ammonia and nitrites at 0 my nitrates seen to always be very low all the time but havent been able to keep it at 0 my salinity seems to stay around 1.023-1.024 my calcium isn’t stable either it goes down to around 380 and I have been adding some Kent marine purple tech which says it raises calcium levels like 25 ppm and hopefully I can get some coralline growing on my tank, here are a few pics of when I started my little project
Oh and I do have a ricordea mushroom that is doing ok as well as a gsp and this weekend I bought a hammer coral that is doing good too

I would probably skip the purple tech, you don’t really have enough stony corals to worry about calcium consumption yet 380 is fine try mixing your saltwater to 1.025 will probably fix the low calcium levels ..If the rest of the corals are fine Keep an eye out for pests

Keeping your tank stable is the key to coral growth and health. I would read as much as possible on coral care and placement before you buy the coral. I like to do a good amount of research from as many sources as possible before I buy any coral.
