Hi, everyone...been a member here since 2016 and I think I have 3 posts..lol. Got out of the hobby back in early 2019, moved to a new home late 2019 and inherited a 55 gallon in-wall freshwater tank. Been keeping the inhabitants alive. but the glo fish just aren't cutting it anymore.
The attached pic was just taken and the blue tape is the outline of my proposed build, 72" x 48" x 24". Will be a built-in with 3 sides visible, the back wall will have my weir going to an external overflow. Right now I'm trying to nail down a tank builder who can do a weir with the glass notched out on the tank wall itself. I'm also considering building the tank myself, but my local glass companies are not responsive. The tank will fit down my stairs, but it will not be fun.

This will be a FOWLR to start, but corals will follow. Will post updates as major progress/decisions are made. :)

I was thinking of building my stand out of 2x6s using King Of DIY's method..after all, the entire stand will be behind a wall. Nonetheless, I am waiting on a quote from Alufab....because why try and save money??
Right now I'm leaning towards Exotic Aquariums for my tank, they can build the overflow I want and even with shipping, still cheaper than other companies near NW Indiana. The lead time isn't that bad, will give me time to prep.
Still trying to get this freshwater tank sold so I can start the demolition.

Slow going over here. Old freshwater tank is gone and wife put a picture in front of the gaping hole in the wall. I built a shell of the tank out of 2x4s and we had a hard time getting it down into the basement...so we deemed it impractical to expect to get 600lb+ glass aquarium down those steps.

So 2 options...go smaller or build on site. There is really only one decent option here...build on-site.

Soo, shifting gears...now I am planning on building a plywood tank, 3 viewing panels. More to come..eventually.

Stand almost done, made out of 2x6, 14 total 2x6 support legs. Going to add some cross brace supports om the middle across top/bottom to finish it off.

Need to go back to HD for more plywood, I had them cut what I needed, but didn't bother to verify the cuts were accurate. smh Will use the spare pieces for the bottom and probably to support the back piece some more.

Fiberglassed the entire tank with Bondo Resin. Had some dry spots early on, but not on seams. It's going to get covered with Pond Shield, so not worried.

3 coats of pond shield. Have a few spots to sand and redo, but not too bad. Reinforced the back with some 2x8s and another 3/4" plywood sheet, cut out for the external overflow. Going to check on the glass status. :)

Here is the latest. Been slow going as the wife decided she wanted us to redo the basement flooring and also gut the bathroom and make it smaller..so been working on that. The glass is going to wait to be installed until after she is done finishing the drywall...I hang, she muds...that was the deal.
Right now I'm trying to figure out how access from the sides will work...I'm thinking drywall on up lifting hydralic hinges, so it just lifts up, but has to look like part of the finished wall when down. I know this has been done before, I just need to see an example.

Project still in progress...needed to reorder more glass for the Eurobracing..should be in this week. Most of the basement project is done now..all the tiling, bathroom etc etc...so I'm getting to a point to start focusing on what I wanted to do in the first place...the tank...smh

Should be ready for a pucker test...I mean water test in a couple weeks.

Eurobracing in place, put another coat of pond shield on the back and bottom because..why not? Put about 5-6" of water in it and will check tomorrow..if all good, will add about a foot more.

Top looking down from the back. Tank is filled all the way now, no signs of leaks. Still a little nervous as this is my virgin build. 1/2" Tempered glass on the 3 sides, 1/2" tempered euro bracing around the perimeter. 1.5" Furring strip around the 3 sides at the top, anchored into the back of the tank on each side. 1.5" plywood bottom, 1.5" plywood/2x6 backwall. Going to let this sit for a week or two to ensure all is well. In the meantime going to start work on the bottom of stand, getting ready for a modular sump system...and work out how the plumbing is all going to work out.

I'm contemplating a closed loop system, but doubt I will go that route...my plans for the tank just don't need that much flow or potential flow...more for cosmetic reasons...not to mention it invalidates my leak testing now...although I could leak test it again.

Started shopping for sumps and just couldn't find the dimensions I wanted...soo, figured with I would just build the sump too. 60x18x20 to fit the fishroom wall nicely and should provide ample volume for back siphon. 3/4" plywood with Bondo and White Pond Shield. Glass should be in tomorrow I hope and then I will work on the baffles and bracing.
Won't have enough pond shield for the outside, so will probably use up my black liquid rubber. Black outside and white inside.
