Hey I have a tank drilled like this, I have an overflow box that I could attach to the main drain. It was originally going to just be a strainer fully submerged. Would it be a good idea to add that?// if it is, how high up should the box be?

If you have a way to do it I would that way you have a surface skimmer. I did something similar with an old hob overflow and and aquaclear hob filter on a 40g breeder and it works very well.
EDIT: not sure about height. I used magnets on the one I made so I could move it up or down

Thanks, to clarify: you think I should attach the overflow box on the main drain, and have the emergency pipe go above the teeth?

I would have it a little lower than the emergency otherwise it may be noisy with water going down the E drain. If the tank isn't to big maybe fill it with tap water and experiment to find the best height.
Correct, have e drain slightly above waterline/box teeth is what I was thinking. Then have the main drain in the box fully submerged. Box filled to right below teeth?
