Hey everyone! Seems like this is the place to be!
It's crazy to think it's been just over a decade since I got any new coral for my reef tank. The last few years it has been pretty lonely in there, other than some softies and my late clown fish (threw her baby pic in my avatar), I had just been maintaining my tank. In some ways you could say my clown passing after 15 years is what finally brought me here. I couldn't stare at an empty tank. While it has been running this whole time, I just stopped adding livestock and at one point had more aptasia than I have ever seen in a tank. I almost got fully back into reefing back in 2018, and rebuilt a bunch of my tank (and had so many berghia!), but life got in the way.
Anyway, while I have kept tabs on the ever evolving technology, I have only recently been diving into the changing perspectives on balance/nutrients. In 2018 it seemed like carbon dosing was the trend, now that has shifted it seems. It is fascinating to say the least, and finally may give me some insight on why my tank might have crashed... which is what really got me to step back in 2010. It just sucked all the fun out of reefing for me. I never really documented it on RC, but I essentially was plagued by zoa eating nudibranchs (zoas we’re my first love) and then several months later by two months of RTN/STN on all my sps (my true love), one by one, all gone. Here was my tank about a year before it crashed:
Anyway, I am well on my way resurrecting my 15 year old 80g tank; same plan, mixed but SPS dominant reef. It has scratches, it isn't shiny (well some of the equipment is ), but it works well. Anyway, glad to be back, I really do enjoy seeing everyone's amazing talents and how much this hobby has advanced.
