Ok great! What would you recommend I start with. Should I get the live sand in bags and some live rock just to get the cycle started.

I did not use LR to cycle because of potential pests.

I used Fritz Zhyme 9 with pre-purpled Carib Sea Rock, (cause I hate white rock) live sand I rinsed, Ammonia and Nitrite went both went up and zeroed in 7 days.

Some believe there’s an inherent plus in LR because there’s “better” diversity and this somehow translates to better cycle.

In the last decade, I have not used any LR, as for me, it was unnecessary as I could have the look of aged rock, with zero chance of pests. It’s a bit expensive but IMM, very worth the price.

Your call, it depends on what makes sense to you.

Welcome to R2R and back to the hobby! If you plan to only have fish for a while and don't mind the sound of water, yes, you can use a HOB filter, an inexpensive (possibly even freshwater-marketed) light, and some dry or live rock. I'd also add a heater and a thermometer to the must haves, and possibly a powerhead to add some additional movement to the water. Depending on the type of fish you want to get, sand may be optional, as you'll see in the forums. In my limited experience, fish only use the light to decide whether it is time to swim around and eat, or go to sleep. I've successfully grown easier corals (neon green candy canes, zoas, favia, stylo, etc) with a relatively inexpensive Current Orbit Marine Pro. But if you want SPS at some point, or some of the more sensitive corals, you'll definitely need better lighting.

edit: I should have added a refractometer and a good test kit to the list of must haves...

Definitely want to echo that going the "used" route would make it the most cost effective to start. I got my first set up (the 95g wave in my build thread) used for a first trial run so when I get my first new system I'll have an idea of what I'm doing!
