I'll collect some relevant data but you need to stop posting the 350 data; it was old six years ago. It wasnt applicable to the 360WE and it isnt applicable to the 360x.

When dealing with lighting sources designed for reef aquaria, I tend to think intensity is more important than spectral quality (as long as a *reasonable* light source is used.)

Color is "mostly" for "look" or "like"...

I'll still argue that, no matter how "changed" it is .. it's still a simple 2 channel unit..

Apparently finally (after how many years did other companies have "multi" channel contol? Well except the Chinese bb's ) they innovated. Granted they have the 700, which is never really talked about much and FINALLY have moonlight.. no more DIY rings (personally not "my" fav feature anyways..)

Prob sound crankier than I mean to be but hey.. still a free country.

Personally see more positives in the "X" version than in the past ones..just an opinion.

Lots of good info in this thread as I am a huge Kessil fan. Has anyone completed the same measurements with two lights at 12", 18" and 24" apart? For those that have tanks needing more then one light, would be nice to see the spread/mixture and par of light.

I haven't done such testing as, since I was retired, rely on either loaner units or donations. Maybe someday.

Thanks. I sort of feel like a stalker. I was searching for some low light corals (actual corals that I'd like to add to my tank in lower lighted, shaded areas, when I came across a article you published back in 2004 (https://www.advancedaquarist.com/2007/3/aafeature1). I enjoyed reading it. In fact, I was diving a wreck 4 or 5 years back in Hawaii, a F4U Corsair, and it was about 114 - 119' feet down. It had a rather large brain coral of some type mixed in with some other stone type corals (and a moray eel). I was really impressed at the corals size and health not to mentioned surprised it was there.

I wanted to ask a question on intensity if possible. By intensity do you mean the power at which the LED is running at (say 80%, 100%, etc)? Thanks again. I really enjoyed the how much light article although I guess it is old news to many.

Yes, the Intensity knob was adjusted to minimum to maximum. Sorry I missed diving on the Corsair - that would have been super cool. Off the Kona coast the depths you mention are about the maximum depths I personally saw corals. Definitely no large outcroppings at 140 feet.

Kinda hard to tell - some colonies look like Pocillopora meandrina/P. eydouxi. Really cool. P-38s are my favorite WWII aircraft, but F4Us are way up there.

Personally, I do not think this is a good way to do things and is misleading. I realize, that they market it maximum 185w, however according to the research, it does not achieve that even closely.

I have been interested in Kessil lights for a long time, yet these results does not generate trust in me for the brand.

Bear in mind that there are multiple spectral settings for the AP700 and I did not test them all. With that said, the P3 International Kill-A-Watt meter I used during testing reported 161 watts at the 'bluest' and 'maximum intensity' settings.

Thanks for clarifying. So the Kessil AP700 could draw closer to the advertised 185 watts of power in the 50/50 setting. The kessil 360X has about 14% power usage increase from whitest to 50/50, so if the same applies to the kessil AP700, 50/50 setting would increase the power usage as well.

It is generally my contention that there are no poor options for aquarium lighting (within reason of course!) but there are poor applications. I present data and let the individual decide if the light is proper for their particular situation.

I dont believe Dana tested this but if all channels were run at 100% (ie. color, intensity, violet, green, and red), power consumption would likely increase. I can test this on a Kil-A-Watt meter next week some time if Dana doesn't already have the data.

Just finishing up my tank build and trying to decide on which lights to go with this time around. My Hydra 52s have served me well but it is time for something new. What are your thoughts on these PAR measurements?

My tank is 28” deep. I really wanna try these lights but I just don’t think that’s enough power for SPS and a 28 inch deep tank. I think even if a put one every 12 to 15 inches they would be hard-pressed to have 100 par on the Sand and 300 par at 12” deep.

Is there something that I missing here? Is it a PUR vs PAR thing? How does one grow SPS 18 inches down with these things? 150 PAR just does not seem like enough. You would think with Kessil being as reputable as they are would make a light that could grow SPS at 18 inches of water depth. Love the color they produce and would love to give them a try. Please share your thoughts. Thanks in advance.

Sorry for the late reply - your message was lost in the shuffle. I just looked at a tank using Hydras Monday. I didn't record the numbers but the owner did. @declanisadog can you share those numbers?

Image states that was what was found to be "maximum".. so there is that.
