Superderek nailed the ID - it's a murex.

They're predatory, feeding on clams, other snails and occasionally corals, from what a quick google search tells me.

This guy won't eat your algae ... but he'll happily dine on those snails which do.

One of those times when an inexpensive snail isn't a bargain, I'm afraid.

Thx so I took it out for f the tank, shld I kill it and keep the shell?

If you can get it back to your LFS, they may be able to find a home where it's welcome.

Technically I cld give it a home, I have a bay next to me and there are literally thousands of snails, so I cld pick up a few and keep it in my fowlr tank

Copper tends to be pretty toxic to invertebrates. Probably not a good idea.

I'd tell your parents of your innocent mistake, share with them what you've learned and ask them what you should do since you're dependent on them for transportation. That's my advice to you.

Alas, we're back to questions only you can answer meaningfully . . .

If you can get your parents to return you (and the murex) to the LFS within a week or so, you can try stowing him in the back chamber of your tank.

If you put him into your FOWLR, you're likely to end up with a nice seashell ... and a bit of ammonia in your tank.

True but the FOWLRs been going thru treatment for a while now and the last two surviving fish in the tank seem to be fine so I might be able to neutralize the copper and put the snail in the tank...what u think

You could try that ...

The worst that could happen is you wind up with a cool (empty) snail shell.

Another option is to get one of those Critter Keeper type acrylic containers with the snap on plastic screened lid (sold at many stores including Walmart) and put the snail in there with some sand etc, then sink the whole container into your tank. Many sizes available. It keeps your other tank inhabitants safe, provides a way to observe him & keeps him sequestered until your fowlr tank is safe to add inverts. Good luck.
