In another thread we discuss if H2O2 (and mainly an oxidator) could take away the yellowing substances in our aquarium. In my case - I have use both an oxidator and CaCO3 and after more than 2 years without a regular WC - my water looks like this compared with fresh saltwater
250527-daylight.jpg

This is a result of Oxidator use for the whole time and precipitation by CaCO3 - 3 times during the last three months

In order to do a check if I get the same result with pure H2O2 and only CaCO3 - I start a test.

I mixed 20 ml of my skimate with 150 ml RO water - and pour it in 6 glasses. 1 control, 1 with a teaspoon of CaCO3. 1 with a teaspoon CaCo3 + 5 ml 12% H2O2. 1 with 5 ml 12% H2O2, 1 with 3 ml 12% H2O2 and one with 1 ml 12% H2O2. I also took a glass with 150 ml tank water.

I run the test for 43 hours - took photo at start, after 1 hour, after 21 hours and after 43 hours

250603-all.jpg

After 1 hour

after-1-hour-250601.jpg

After 21 Hours

after-21-hour-250602.jpg

After 43 hours

after-243-hour-250603.jpg

After already 1 hour - even 1 ml H2O2 give result.

In order to see if I can get result during time with higher concentrations of yellowing substances and lower concentrations of H2O2 - I will do a test with 100 % skimate and lower percentage H2O2. Result will come later on.

Sincerely Lasse
What is an Oxidator? And what does it do? Keeps water clean kinda like carbon?

Interesting. I have 4 month tank that had lots of ciano after dinos. It's a new tank, it's expected. But after 5 days running an oxydator, cianos are completely gone.

It may be due to its natural course as the tank mature but it was right after the addition of the oxydator...

Hi all

My name is Lasse Forsberg and I live in small place named Bohus – 20 kilometres north Gothenburg, Sweden. I got my first tank 1961 when I was eleven years old and lived in an inland country town 160 kilometres from Gothenburg – I had it for a couple of years but soon I become a teenager and get interested of some other living things. Back in 1974 when I move to Gothenburg together with my girlfriend I started with aquariums again. Today - the same girlfriend is my wife since 39 years ago so there has not been any reason to stop the hobbyJ. For those that is good in math – I know that 1974 is 42 years ago but here in Sweden – we like to test things for a long time before we decide us – at least the female part need timeJ. The best things with long partnership is that different project does not always need to be wife approved – only wife accepted.

My professional life has been everything that have with water, fish, water treatment, fish farming and public aquariums to do – both from a biological and technical point of view. I´m retired since 1 year ago but still working with recirculated fish farming (farming catfish) and with one of the public aquariums in Gothenburg – Sjöfartsmuseet Akvariet.

My old tank that I started 6 years ago did not work very well this summer and I was very busy during the autumn and in January I sold that aquarium (and another well working aquarium).

This movie show my Percula 120 during spring 2015 and the picture show my Red Sea Max 130.

However – I had a plan to start another tank – a tank that should be little like showcase what I have learned during my more than 40 year as an aquarist. In January this year I order an aquarium from Poland – a custom build tank with a display tank of 300 litres.

This is the first idea

pic1.jpg

This was the final order - I want it like this. I send some text and some pictures to a guy that did not speak Swedish and not so good English either (and I do not speak Polish !) I have a friend that speak Polish so if I got some question - he could help me - I hope. The delivery (pre pay) was promised to be early march. After paying - the sound of silence was my Polish aquarium builders signature tune. No questions - no contact

pic 2.jpg

pic 3.jpg

March pass by - no Aquarium - a little bit nervous. My wife looks at me with special expression in her face. (after 42 years, I know what that look means) April start - and finally I got a e-mail - delivery on Monday. The tank arrived on Tuesday (same week)

pic 4.jpg

It was perfect - it was like I wanted it.

Now - the build could start - I let the pictures talk for them selves

Absolutely gorgeous!! What a masterpiece. You certainly have the mind of an engineer! Both functionality and aesthetics are perfect. Good on you sir! I could only dream of designing something like this 🤩

Beside music taste - my aquarium still going strong but its not the reef of the month at the moment. Yesterday - I was on my way to do a minor change and realize that my reef maybe was on the eve of destruction . The change I did was not a minor change.

IMG_20250917_091245.jpg
4.3 Kg - mostly dead Seriatopora skeletons was removed and the reef was remodelled. I will come back with a picture later on in the evening how it looks like now - no moonscape but now there are growth opportunities. My reef a couple of months ago. The colonies inside the red marking had to go to the happy hunting grounds. They had growth up to the surface and harbour a lot of bubble algae inside the structure. Some parts could be saved and I have to wait another 2 - 3 years before I do next "minor" intervention.

I got better flow and light now.

It has been especially pleasing to come back, after a 3 year disappearing act, and see you still here and doing your special things!

How is our friend at the new, public aquarium doing?

Very well - the 400 000 L tank have been up an running for nearly 3 years now

Welcome back

Sincerely Lasse

That tracks perfectly with my 3 year MIA.

Thanks for the “welcome back.”

I think I still have his email and, even if I don’t, I’ll track him down at the aquarium in Gothenburg.

I did an ICP test on the 29th and got the results yesterday. Looks good - ran some GFO and now PO4 is below 0.2. This time it was a regular IPC-OES. I usually run ICP-OES and ICP-MS every other time. The only serious problem I have is the persistent increase in tin and I don't really know where it comes from. It's down to 10 µg/L now - was over 35

1759573002334.png

Then I'm so careful with potassium that I went too low there. I decided to do some water changes to fix that value. Since I used OCEAMO corrector, I can vary my addition of potassium (added separately). It takes 4 water changes of 5 liters to get the potassium up to 400 again.

1759573275795.png

Fluoride has been discussed here and there and I have been historically low on it but slowly working it up

1759573344995.png

The lanthanum that I had just over 1 µg/L at the last measurement was n.n now. But ICP-OES is notorious for giving wrong results for lanthanum, so I have to wait until the next ICP-MS to see if it has disappeared completely.

1759573477240.png

I usually use OCEAMO's service with customized dosage - they mix a solution (or several) of what is too little - usually dosing quickly with the macronutrients but slowly with the trace elements which are usually dosed - in my case - over 100 days. Now I did an OES analysis and it is usually not very reliable when it comes to trace elements - therefore I wait with a customized dosage until the next ICP - MS test

I also took the opportunity to order an ICP-MS organic test which I will receive in a week or so. It will be exciting to see what it says.

The winter is coming - no open doors and my CO2 content indoors vary between 430 and up to 800 ppm. It become as cold as we can´t have the bedroom terrass door open during night either. Skimmer takes itsa air from the outside and is also filtrated through a CO2 scrubber. Using my logs I have looked at if and when CO2 either leaves or enters the aquarium water. I have measured the current pH value with my P4 and using this program calculated both the equilibrium pH value and the actual pH.

During most of the day - my internal CO2 production is the dominate CO2 source in my aquarium

Sincerely Lasse
