Thanks Lasse. It seems pretty simple.
So, the “device” must stay fully submerged?

Yes – I am thinking in the same way - I have a D in reserve - just in case I get a power breakdown. In my fuge I have a DSB and if I get a power cut – I risk a production of hydrogen sulphide from the DSB. I have the D type in order to place in the fuge if a power cut happens.

Yes it has to be submerged and probably it is better to have it deeper than I have

In Sweden we have a saying – det blir tårta på tårta – it means shortly “there will be cake on cake” :)

But in some way – it depends on what you want to achieve with this combo. In my world Ozone can be a stronger oxidation agent compared with the oxydator and if you are out for killing bacteria or parasites – oxydator maybe will be too weak. But I do not know because I haven´t test.

So the oxydato
Yes - I found it better and more safe compared with Ozon. Activated carbon - it have never worked out for me. One plus is that you can use it as an oxygen source during power cuts.

Sincerely Lasse

So the oxidation is primarily to remove the yellowing organic compounds (what are those anyway?) to improve water clarity? Or are there other benefits?

It doesn't kill off bacteria like ozone?

The compounds responsible for the yellow tint in a saltwater aquarium (frankly – in all aquariums) is mostly humus and humic acids. It’s a result of the breakdown process. I nature – you can see the same yellow tint in the water from swamps.

Hydrogen peroxide should have the same killing effect as Ozone – its only a question of dose. As an example – hydrogen peroxide is often use as a parasite killer in Norwegian Salmon farms.

Hydroge peroxide - at the right dose - will kill bacteria. My favorite veterinarian always put some concentrated H202 on open wounds when an animal has bitten him - it kills everything - he claim :)

However – if the low doses that I think is responsible for my clear water has any effect on parasites or bacteria I do not know. Very low doses of Ozone will also give a clear water – but if it will give other good effects – I´m not sure on that either.

I am willing to believe that my constant low level dosage of hydrogen peroxide give me some protection against cyano and parasites but I do not know. I can see that’s it seems to make my water clear but other good effects – there is no prove for that. And I can´t say that it has no negative effects either because I have not compare with a similar aquarium. And of cause I can´t say with 100 % that my very clear water is caused by the oxydator but all in all other aquariums (salt and fresh) I have had without an oxydator (or Ozone) – I have got a water with a yellow tint – so I´m at least 95 % sure :).

Hydrogen peroxide will also help to maintain a good oxygen level if there is a power cut or other circumstances that lower the natural oxygen level. That trick has I used so many times that I 100 % sure of that. I hope that I later on will be able to log my oxygen profile (in my aquarium) for 48 hours and with different equipment’s.

Thanks Lasse. I like the low tech approach and might order one Oxydator and give it a try. Just need to make sure sump water depth it’s ok for it.

Great to see your thread Lasse! Do you perhaps have a picture of the DSB setup somewhere in there (there's a lot of pages to look through!!)?

I've got to give it to you - the tank is incredibly natural looking and a lot more like a real reef than most of the tanks here. Very cool!

If you have the time - check out my new build thread for my shallow reef here: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/mr-greens-34-gallon-shallow-build.327654/

It's 15 months already, but I'm saving some pictures of the mature tank for the weekend. ;)

Cheers,
Leon

A week ago I got 2 pipefish around 4 cm. They they were breed at a fish farm in Sri Lanka and should take dead food. They was small and I placed them in my fuge – with a lot of pods. This morning I got a surprise – one of them had escaped into the display tank. We will see if it manage to find food in here – I hope so
